Choose Point Person: to make short presentation at next Heritage Kitchener meeting 2. Work Plan: develop a strategy to promote greater public education and awareness of heritage conservation/investigate opportunities to develop partnerships with other area municipalities, the Region, community organizations, academic institutions and businesses to broaden the support base for heritage locally 3. Identify special skills or interests of sub-committee members: e.g., social media, connections with specialists, research and writing (text for interpretive plaques), etc. 4. Brainstorm ways to promote heritage: e.g., · How do we communicate why we do what we do and how do we influence the public mindset to encourage heritage conservation? · What information should be disseminated (general, specific, technical, resources, etc.)? · In what format is it provided (newsletters, brochures, homeowners guides, media releases, hard copy, online, posters, etc.)? · How to get it out (print media, radio, television, social media, website, town crier, workshops, presentations, etc.)? · Continue established practices (Regional Heritage Showcase) ‘Homework’: research online what other communities do that can be done here Ideas: e.g., · update existing brochures · plan workshops (to promote heritage programs, guest lecturers, with real estate board, how to research your home, bring in your old photos) · new programs that the public might get excited about (heritage property plaques in HCDs, e.g., London, Saugeen Shores) · provide Councillors with ideas for when they write articles for newspapers or make presentations (e.g., recent designations or heritage related developments within their ward) · review website for updated/additional content (e.g., expand Register to include text & photos, resources) - www.kitchener.ca/en/livinginkitchener/Heritage.asp 5 . Ideas from last meeting: · Write blurb for Councillors: Sandy to write 1-2 paragraphs regarding the designation of 1683 Huron Rd and 800 King St E for Grayson to forward to Councillors to possibly use in their newspapers columns ·Partner with KW Association of Realtors: Megan to contact KWAR re linking to Kitchener brochures about what it means to own a designated or listed property – possible heritage-themed article in Saturday’s Record ‘Homes’ section – opportunities at KWAR XPO Conference in May?; Sandy to work on preparing electronic brochures · Participate in Events: Grayson to look into possible events to participate in · Building Stories: members to review Building Stories website (www.buildingstories.co) - ‘About Us’, ‘FAQ’ & ‘Mobile App’ sections. Is this something the Sub-Committee thinks Kitchener should b e part of? What should be on it? · Partner with area municipalities: Leon to contact local municipalities to see if there are opportunities to partner on events, etc. · Civic Centre HCD: members to review interpretive plaque wording and provide Sandy with suggestions · Local Cultural Heritage Information Update: Leon advised that the Region offers an e- newsletter with upcoming cultural heritage information – go to http://row.enews.esolutionsgroup.ca to sign up ·Articles in local media: are there opportunities to suggest ‘good news’ stories to local reporters, columnists?
