SUBJECT: Citizen Appointment to Heritage Kitchener (2018)
___________________________________________________________________________
RECOMMENDATION:
That Samantha Hossack be appointed to Heritage Kitchener as the representative for the
Civic Centre Heritage Conservation District for the term ending November 30, 2018.
BACKGROUND:
There was a need to recruit for the Boards of Centre in the Square, Kitchener Housing Inc., and
Kitchener Power Corporation for 2018. Since there were remaining vacancies on Heritage
Kitchener for representatives for the St. Mary’s and Civic Centre Heritage Conservation
Districts, as well as the Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) for the sectors of
Downtown Office Owner, Major Retail (outside of Downtown), Health Care, and Education, staff
recruited for these positions at the same time.
REPORT:
Recruitment took place over a 3-week span at the beginning of September using various means
including the Kitchener Post, the Kitchener Citizen, radio, a poster campaign, social media, an
email blast to the Neighbourhood Association representatives, and the City’s website. As well,
eligible citizens who were registered in the City’s volunteer database were contacted.
In terms of Heritage Kitchener, only one (1) eligible application was received, which was for the
Civic Centre Heritage Conservation District. With respect to EDAC, no eligible applications
were received. If there are more applications than vacancies, the applications are forwarded to
the Nominating Committee to recommend a slate to Council for decision. If there are not, the
Director of Legislated Services/City Clerk makes a recommendation directly to Council.
