NOVEMBER 16, 2017 CITY OF KITCHENER
The Environmental Committee met this date commencing at 4:04 p.m.

The Community Energy Investment Strategy
prepared by Mr. D. Roewade, Sustainability Specialist, Region of Waterloo.
He noted this presentation is in follow-up to the draft Strategic framework for CEIS presented
to the Committee for initial feedback on June 15, 2017. He advised a full draft of the Strategy
has now been completed and requested
Mr. Roewade provided an overview of the Community Energy Investment Strategy (CEIS),
of life through the coordination of targeted investments in energy investments. He provided a
brief summary of the strategy development process, the energy profile of Waterloo Region,
and the main themes gathered from community stakeholders. He outlined the goals and
objections of the Strategy which include: significantly improving the energy performance of
buildings; optimizing local energy generation and stability; transitioning to low-carbon local
transportation; and, cultivating a supportive and innovative environment for energy investment.
He advised 22 energy opportunities were derived from research, stakeholder consultation and
best practices in other communities which represent changes that could be made in or by the
community to generate or conserve energy differently. He further outlined recommended
actions that CEIS partners could use to support or facilitate the uptake and implementation of
the energy opportunities.
Members of the Committee asked a number of questions related to the Community Energy
Investment Strategy and Mr. Roewade provided responses.
Mr. Roewade encouraged any members having additional feedback to forward their comments
via email to droewade@regionofwaterloo.ca by December 14, 2017.
Mr. B. Sloan advised in addition to providing comments in writing to Mr. Roewade, the
Committee may also wish to consider drafting a recommendation in support of this initiative at
their next meeting on December 14, 2017 to provide to Council for their consideration.

Ms. B. Steiner led a discussion on the various Sub-Committees. The following updates were
provided:
Item 7.1 - Environmental Events
The Committee was in receipt
regarding a list of 2018 City of Kitchener events relating to the environment, the event dates
and descriptions, and potential public outreach ideas. Ms. T. Driver advised the Committee to
provide additional ideas and/or feedback to allow the Sub-Committee to organize resources.
The Sub-Committee recommended finalizing a public outreach campaign for each event and
assessing how many Committee members are needed. The Sub-Committee further
recommended a lead person be assigned to each of the environmental events.
