HomeMy WebLinkAboutSHCAC Minutes - 2018-04-05 SAFE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES APRIL 5, 2018 CITY OF KITCHENER The Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4 p.m. Present: Chair – Mr. D. Witmer Councillor S. Marsh, Ms. A. Venner, Ms. T. Smith, and Messrs. G. Albert and A. Ganem- Mohamed Staff: M. Hildebrand, Director, Community Programs D. Keelan, Manager, Aquatics & Volunteer Services J. McKenzie, Administrative Coordinator L. Korabo, Committee Administrator 1. Work Plan Update: Foster Stronger Relationships with local schools update: How to rent a room/cafeteria with the school boards – both school boards have updated websites, simple step by step procedures to help facilitate rental bookings for customers. City of Kitchener community centres’ manager contacted as to whether or not he would like to participate in training for community centre staff or to share information from school boards regarding the ease of facility rentals on the school board’s websites. Mr. M. Hildebrand to follow up with Mr. S. Roth CPTED Safety Concerns: Eight community centre audits still to be completed:  Centreveille Chicopee community centre safety audit tour scheduled for April 2, 2018; and,  Rockway community centre safety audit tour scheduled for May 11, 2018. Messrs. G. Albert and A. Ganem-Mohamed to check their availability to assist Mr. B. Page with note taking in order to expedite tours. Downtown community centre recommendations from safety audit update: Washroom usage the recommendation to put doors be on the shower stalls has been completed and working well. Site lines from the front door to the front desk are an issue. There is only a volunteer to greet patrons as they come and should be city staff. Investigation into ways to configure the front desk to be first point of contact from City of Kitchener staff. (Working Centre suggestion – multiple workstations where staff can interact with patrons). 2. Plaque update: Potential design was unveiled March 21, 2018 at the United Nations event at City Hall. Design is a work in progress – design on display during the event was four circles representing four indigenous races. Ms. D. Keelan discussed with Ms. G. Sabry that city staff do support a plaque to celebrate Inclusion. Ms. D. Keelan to connect with appropriate City staff in order to remove red tape. Consultation Councillor S. Marsh suggested money be put aside in any grant received for consultation fees Consultant be Indigenous Expenses Funding – Inclusion and Belonging grant Design – still in discussion Council/Committee approval City Council Heritage Committee Park Committee Next steps – Mr. M. Hildebrand to meet with Janette MacDonald – community engagement Mr. G. Albert to inquire about pricing a design implemented on an actual rock SAFE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES APRIL 5, 2018 CITY OF KITCHENER 3. Inclusion and Belonging Grant Mr. M. Hildebrand shared an Inclusion and Belonging grant application with the group for discussion. Questions from the committee for the applicant: Maximum of Inclusion and Belonging grant is $2,000, where is other $40,000 to come from (yes on condition that applicant reaches full funding). What is the $40,000 for – musical therapy? Attendance in the first three months looking for some feedback and more information. The Committee inquired if instruments in addition to those listed would be used. How much money does the committee have to allocate for the entire year? $32,000 in total. On motion, it was resolved: “That an Inclusion and Belonging Grant in the amount of $2,000 be approved for Music Therapy at House of Friendship; and, That the Inclusion and Belonging Grant funding be conditional upon funding for the total amount of the proposed program ($42, 000) being confirmed from other sources; and further, That if full funding of the proposal, as submitted, is not achieved, consideration be given to re- scoping the program in order to operate within confirmed funding amounts.” 4. New Business Thank you from the committee to Ms. L. Korabo who administered for this committee since 1999. 5. Adjournment On motion, the meeting adjourned at 5:05 p.m. J.
