HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-04-26 DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES April 26, 2018City of Kitchener The Downtown Action & Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:05 p.m. Present: Scott Thomson (Chair), Councillor Frank Etherington, Aaron Francis, Bryan Gracan, David Harmes, Linda Jutzi, Councillor Sarah Marsh, Robert Nyman, Martin Timmerman Staff: Hilary Abel, Mistie Brown, Chris Farrell, Chloe Howell It has been noted that there were not enough committee members to form a quorum. Chair opening remarks S. Thomson presented the following invitations extended to the committee: Save the Date All Committees Meeting on Thursday June 21, 2018 The Canada Lecture on Citizenship on Tuesday May 22, 2018 ACTION: C. Howell will forward invitations to the committee. Information Items/Unfinished business 1. Downtown Development Update H. Abel Showed DTK Condos promotional video to get feedback from committee, received good responses overall. 2. Arts & Culture Advisory Committee (ACAC) Update A. Francis 44 Gaukel moving along Open Ears Festival May 30, 2018 CAFKA.18 Recognize Everyone biennial exhibition opens June 2, 2018 3. Downtown BIA Update L. Jutzi 3.1 Waste Management To promote the downtown area as an attractive place to hang out after work, we need to address the issue of garbage on the streets, especially near the patios where people are sitting. 1 DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES April 26, 2018City of Kitchener Waste management committee created, includes people from several community groups, the BIA and the City of Kitchener. The to go along King Street from 5 8 p.m. and collect any garbage put out on the sidewalks. Need to collect data from this year to create a business case to present to the Region of Waterloo in order to amend by-law regarding business and residential garbage on streets. Street and take pictures and email information to Stephanie Golling at the BIA. Education for landlords, employees and residents will be a big part of this program. 3.2 Business Attraction Program BIA created a program to help businesses create and improve their digital assets to help them succeed in a tough retail market. Program is available to both new and existing businesses within the downtown Kitchener BIA boundary. BIA creating a brochure with easy wording to explain the need for businesses to have digital marketing. A board will determine successful applicants, and companies are eligible to receive up to $3,000 to spend on digital marketing. The City Façade Grant is also outlined in the brochure. ACTION: L. Jutzi to bring the brochure to the next meeting to show DAAC members if interested. 3.3 Mural Program Mural Program has been launched. 2 DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES April 26, 2018City of Kitchener Funding includes $70,000 on the mural and $30,000 on new signs to lead people to downtown Kitchener. Mural will cover Eby Street from King St to Duke St. Received nine submissions and the successful artist will be chosen through a jury, with the C Arts and Creative Industries division assisting the process. Hope is to have this completed sometime in June, but the timeline is tight. Launch party will be held on a Sunday at the Kitchener Market with live music. Even though Thermoplast (the material being used for the mural) has a ten-year life span, there will be a contingency fund for mural maintenance. 3.4 Patio Crawl nd 2 Annual Patio Crawl to be held on June 21, 2018 to celebrate the first day of summer. Live music at restaurants and on the street to encourage people to come and enjoy the patios. business they visit; people can submit these passports to the BIA to win one of two grand prizes of $500 Downtown Dollars. Discussion Items 3. #DTKsummer Programming and Marketing Presentation SHAPE DTK 2020 priorities include supporting niche communities and bringing the downtown From May 24, 2018, Goudies Lane will be open to pedestrians only. Instead of transient furniture which required a lot of staff time and resources to maintain, they are exploring options to have picnic tables set up all the time. Other ideas to help the space feel welcoming, there will be planters and possibly string lights and speakers to pipe music into the laneway. 3 DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES April 26, 2018City of Kitchener Free public wifi might also be an option to encourage people to use Goudies Lane as an outdoor co-working space. To show people that it is a free public space, the team is looking to provide board games, hula hoops, books etc. for people to use in the laneway. Question asked if the Goudies Lane murals were permanent or would they be changed from year to year? Answer: until the Queen Street Placemaking project is done and the Goudies Lane surface is fixed, the murals will stay as is. M. Brown made a presentation on all the events and programming taking place in DTK over the summer. Adjournment: Chair adjourned meeting at 5:35 p.m. 4
