HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts & Culture - 2018-09-18 Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES SEPTEMBER 18, 2018CITY OF KITCHENER PRESENT:Shirley Madill Dave Schnider Lori Thompson Lydia Workman Aaron Francis Sam Varteniuk REGRETS:Julie Barker Linda Zensner Pam Patel Judy Allred STAFF:Emily Robson, coordinator, arts/creative industries Karoline Varin, recording secretary,arts/creative industries CALL TO ORDER:Sam Varteniuk 1.0Acceptance of agenda:agenda accepted 2.0Declaration of conflict of interest: none DELEGATION 3.0Urban Design Manual:Dayna Edwards & Adam Clark, Planning Division Manual used as a resource for developers, residents, special-interest groups, city council and staff who are looking for details on the city's urban design guidelines and standards in planning and implementing capital projects The City of Kitchener is undertaking a comprehensive update of the manual to better reflect the city’s design vision, better organize the content, have a streamlined and consistent format and a better visual communication This September, the draft is brought to citizen and committee members Goalis to have citizen and committee members’ input by Spring 2019 Asking members to read, review and provide feedback on the draft as it applies to inclusion of public art; suggested that a small sub-committee of 2-3 ACAC members volunteerfor review These ideas have been identified to keep in mind when making recommendations for updating the manual: o Articulating the goals of public art o Public artprojects in urban development should be a guiding principal o Inclusivity and new cultural traditions withinthe community should be taken into account o It was noted that a list of already available/proposed projects would be an excellent resourcefor developersto find projects of interest ACTION: Staff to follow up with members interestedin taking part in the review. DISCUSSION ITEMS 4.0Monuments, Memorials, Plaques & Public Art September2018-ACAC Minutes 1 ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES SEPTEMBER 18, 2018CITY OF KITCHENER Recently staff in different divisionshavehad a number of requestsfor installing monuments and/ormemorialswithin the community The need to develop a consistent response and processhas been identified ACAC members were asked for their input about pointsto consider when dealing with such requests Suggestions offered included: o It is recommended that staff consider other stakeholderswho could be included in the process o Working with the individual/organization to determine motives for the remembrance to help guide design and location o Consistency of design should be considered; perhaps a template provided by the city o Being sensitive to historical interpretationsis important ACAC members determined that this is a complex and important issue to which due time and diligence should be allotted INFORMATION ITEMS 5.0City Updates:Emily Robson Plans for refurbishing the main floor layout of 44 Gaukel Street are underway There is interest already for leasing the space In the meantime, events continue to happen in the space ACTION: proposal to hold one of the meetings at the site City is preparing a publication about people and organizations who are pushing the envelope and initiatives in the arts and culture sector Asking ACAC members for input on who to include ACTION: staff will send a description of the publication to provide more details 6.0Downtown Action and Advisory Committee:Aaron Francis Last meeting was centered on the development of Queen Street and Vogelsang Green ACTION: staff to provide updated report on the Queen Street/Vogelsang Green re-development for the next ACAC meeting 7.0Economic Development Advisory Committee:Shirley Madill Discussion of arts and culture impact in the context of economic development Looking to provide tourism with a video and would like to include arts and culture 8.0Public Art Working Group:Lydia Workman An Artist in Residence information session was held in lieu of a regular meeting Staff outlined the program and five past artists briefly talked about theirresidency experiences Followed by a question and answer period from the audience 9.0Council Report: Councilor Dave Schnider LRT design crossing at Vanier and Fairview was discussed to make it more safe 10.0Member’s updates:all Shirley: Shared KWAG’s new fall program guide September2018-ACAC Minutes 2 ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES SEPTEMBER 18, 2018CITY OF KITCHENER The gallery will be hosting a panel in partnership with Alliance for a Grand Community, on the impact of arts and culture on economic development on October 16, 2018, at 7 p.m.; everybody is welcome Lori: Registered to make a walk of fame similar to one in Hollywood and Toronto,to recognize and commemorate accomplishments of local talent Sam: Working with JM Drama andin partnership with the Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Counciland the Sexual Assault Support Centre, to present Chelsea’s Story–a play out of UK about human sex trafficking.
