3.0Urban Design Manual:Dayna Edwards & Adam Clark, Planning Division
Manual used as a resource for developers, residents, special-interest groups, city council
and staff who are looking for details on the city's urban design guidelines and standards
in planning and implementing capital projects
The City of Kitchener is undertaking a comprehensive update of the manual to better
reflect the city’s design vision, better organize the content, have a streamlined and
consistent format and a better visual communication
This September, the draft is brought to citizen and committee members
Goalis to have citizen and committee members’ input by Spring 2019
Asking members to read, review and provide feedback on the draft as it applies to
inclusion of public art; suggested that a small sub-committee of 2-3 ACAC members
volunteerfor review
These ideas have been identified to keep in mind when making recommendations for
updating the manual:
o Articulating the goals of public art
o Public artprojects in urban development should be a guiding principal
o Inclusivity and new cultural traditions withinthe community should be taken into
account
o It was noted that a list of already available/proposed projects would be an
excellent resourcefor developersto find projects of interest
ACTION: Staff to follow up with members interestedin taking part in the review.

ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 18, 2018CITY OF KITCHENER
Recently staff in different divisionshavehad a number of requestsfor installing
monuments and/ormemorialswithin the community
The need to develop a consistent response and processhas been identified
ACAC members were asked for their input about pointsto consider when dealing with
such requests
Suggestions offered included:
o It is recommended that staff consider other stakeholderswho could be included in
the process
o Working with the individual/organization to determine motives for the
remembrance to help guide design and location
o Consistency of design should be considered; perhaps a template provided by the
city
o Being sensitive to historical interpretationsis important
ACAC members determined that this is a complex and important issue to which due time
and diligence should be allotted
