Interim Report on the Berm Revitalization and Naturalization Project
Trinity Village received funding from TD FEF in October 2017. The TD FEF grant for
$8300 became only a portion of funding for the Berm Project. After receiving the TD-
FEF grant, it was suggested in that we also apply to the City of Kitchener for a
Neighbourhood Matching Grant (NMG) for $15,000. We then approached a nursery to
provide a quote for revitalizing the entire berm using native species. Armed with this
detailed quote of $33,900, we applied both to the City of Kitchener for the NMG and a
private foundation for further funding. When we were turned down for the NMG in
February 2018, it was suggested that we apply to the City of Kitchener for the
Community Environment Improvement Grant (CEIG). In the process of working with
City Planning Department to apply for this grant, it was discovered that Trinity Village is
under a perpetual Landscape Management Agreement with the City, meaning that any
changes to the landscape at Trinity Village must first be approved by the City Planning
Department. The CEI Grant was awarded in late April 2018 with conditions for release
of the funding being the provision to the City Planning Department of an approved
Landscape Management Plan for the berm. Working with a Landscape Architecture we
received a quote for double the amount of the grant. The City then agreed to allow our
summer student to work out a planting design and density that they would approve in
th
late August 2018. The city funding was released on August 30, 2018. The Private
Foundation declined to contribute in July 2018.
Realizing the changing scope of the project, the Berm was divided into 7 sections to be
worked on over 3 years. The centre section between the two driveways has become
the focus of 2018/19. With some very dedicated volunteers we have cleared sections 2
and 5 of dead and invasive shrubbery and added much needed compost. The
tree/shrub mix has been ordered from St. Williams Nursery and Ecology Centre near
Port Rowan. They will keep the shrubs and trees over the winter with shipping
expected in early Spring 2019. We look forward to completing the entire centre sections
in 2019 and very possibly begin work on Sections 1, 6 and 7.The Whole project should
be completed by fall 2020.

Environment Improvement Grant) to facilitate some remedial work on the
berm along the front of the property. The Region of Waterloo is donating
both the compost and the wood chips for this project. We are grateful to
these supporters of the project.
With respect to the berm itself, we will be taking out the invasive cherry
shrubs, revitalizing what we can of the rest and planting the empty spaces
with native tree and shrub species. The work is divided into 7 sections from
north to south and will continue until 2020 as funding permits.
Participation: There are many ways to involve yourself in this project.
1)Save your newspapers and fold them in sheets of 10 or more to be
used as a weed barrier.
2)Help write the story of the berm either in words or photography.
3)Sponsor a shrub or two (they start as low as $6.) We can show you
what we are planting and you can decide what section and shrubs
you would like to sponsor.
4)Sponsor some perennial plants for the welcome gardens at either end

of the centre sections.
5)Volunteer some time to help in the spring. There will be tough jobs;
there will be easy jobs; and we can always use some cheerleaders.
Much work has been already done on the berm and Trinity village would
like to acknowledge the tremendous help of Ron Desrocher and Richard
Voisin in putting their back to the work as well as that of of Audrey
Desrocher and Sheila Voisin in photographing the progress and keeping
track of volunteer hours spent. If you think you would like to participate in
community building by lending a hand in any way from newspapers to
cheerleading, please contact me at hlee@trinityvillage.comor 519-896-3112
