The Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee met this date November 1, 2018, commencing
at 4:08p.m.
Present: Chair – Mr. D. Witmer

D. Keelan, Manager, Aquatics
J. McKenzie, Administrative Coordinator, Program & Resource Services
1. Snow Angels Program Update
Ms. M. Pender shared the Snow Angels program update with the committee
Recommendations being forwarded:
That the City continue to recognize those individuals who are helping their neighbours with their
snow shoveling
That the City develop a more comprehensive communications plan about the snow angels
recognition program
That the City provide the necessary resources to help residents self-organize around snow
shoveling in their community, in the form of a step-by-step guide.
Next steps: Final draft of the Snow Angels step-by-step guide and accompanying snow angels
promotional templates were sent via email to the committee.
The guide will be posted on the Love My Hood website and it will be promoted through social
media. The committee was also asked to share the guide with their contacts. A link to the snow
blower program will be included on the website.
2. Inclusion & Belonging Grant – KW Multicultural Centre
Mr. M. Hildebrand presented the KW Multicultural Centre grant request
Background:
The project is a partnership between the KW Multicultural Centre, Congress of Black Women,
Waterloo Region, the Canadian Caribbean Association, and numerous other individuals. To
celebrate Black History month in Canada the project wishes to change from using the
American anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” to “Hymn To Freedom”. This process requires
the input of many professionals, historical research, a multicultural choir of over 100 voices
accompanied by any orchestra and more. Expenses include musical costs, productions costs,
artistic visuals and a launch event.
The amount being requested is $500.
On motion,
it was resolved:
“That an inclusion and Belonging Grant in the amount of $500 be approved for KW
Multicultural Centre”
3. Work Plan Update (Outstanding items)
No updates provided.
The committee requested that the remaining top 10 recommendations to the City of Kitchener,
from the Rainbow community Council, be brought forward for consideration in the work plan of
next term’s Safe and Healthy Advisory Committee
Next steps: Amy will provide a list of the unfinished items to Mark and Janis to share with next
term’s advisory committee.
Final Survey (Advisory Committees)
Mr. M. Hildebrand handed out surveys and committee asked to complete before they left the
meeting. Janis to send out surveys to committee members who were absent.
