CITY OF KITCHENER
• Community services is currently working on developing these three programs:
Neighbourhood Greening, Public Seating and Public Art within the Neighbourhood Places
Program
• It is looking to develop guides for these programs
• The Public Art guide would include how the City of Kitchener defines "public art" vs.
neighbourhood -led art projects, the benefits of such projects and public art, how
residents can lead an art project in their neighbourhood with steps such as talking to
neighbours and developing the goal/focus of the piece, working with and compensating
an artist, securing finances, writing a grant and budget, maintenance plan and other key
elements that go into public art projects
• Arts and Creative staff engaged an artist to review the draft documents for the guide
that city staff had prepared through cross -divisional consultations
• A public consultation meeting was held on November 29th to determine action items and
to receive input from the public pertaining to public art, neighbourhood greening and
public seating initiatives.
• Emphasis was placed on gauging expectations related to the roles and responsibilities of
city staff and residents when executing these projects
• ACAC members noted that there are many neighbourhood faith facilities that may be
interested in renting spaces to community spaces to carry out projects
• ArtsBuild also provides a resource of spaces to rent
ACTION ITEM: Suggested for city staff to invite ArtsBuild to an ACAC meeting
