DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
Feb 28, 2019 City of Kitchener
The Downtown Action & Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:00 p.m.
Present: Bryan Gracan, David Harmes, Erin Atchison, Geoffrey Guin,
Jeannette Makad, Linda Jutzi, Martin Timmerman, Rick Booth, Sandra
Castle, Scott Thomson, Tori Mikhnovsky, Tricia Smith, William Turman
Staff: Hilary Abel, Mistie Brown, Chloe Howell, Marzena Rachwal, Victoria Boyle
Information Items/Unfinished Business
1) Retail Steering Committee
Update on the retail steering committee meeting on Monday, Feb 25 2019.
Reviewed the survey findings completed through @thelocaladvocate Instagram on Feb 1, 2019.
Each question had 750 views and 40-50 responses. Responses assist in rating our food and
nightlife; overall food ratings were higher than the ratings for nightlife.
Provincial funding needs to be complete by March 2020.
2) Looking ahead- DAAC agenda for 2019
Meetings will be dedicated to; cycling infrastructure, exploring past projects, what is important,
how the landscape has changed. Strategy 2.0 and understanding the difference of activity.
Emily Robson is assisting to develop a guidebook as a bigger project, will include all of the
committees input.
3) Downtown team update
Round table introduction of committee members and two new staff hires, Marzena Rachwal and
Victoria Boyle.
Recommended action: Send out DAAC email list for distributing information purposes.
Discussion Items
4) King Street East Discussion: Part 2
Review of the King St. E. Evolution 2019/2020 Action Plan. Review of the four headings; Feelings
of Safety & Inclusion, Public Spaces, Brand & Identity, Retail & Restaurant Support.

As the project progresses, staff will keep the group informed and involved.
DAAC Comments: LRT partnership: free space for marketing & signage
5) Summer 2019 Programming and group discussion: M. Brown
M. Brown introduced the DTK team, projects, and festivals. Started out with an interactive activity with
the committee, “memorable experience in DTK”.
Focus on smaller festivals.
Shape DTK 2020- Local/Diverse/Community/Grit. Focus on “after 5 culture shift”. Creating new series
and new events; Food Truck Festival, Yoga in the Park (shifting to Mondays @ 6pm), Books & Nooks,
Sunset Sessions (concert series every Tuesdays at sundown).
King St E- Field Trip Series, King East Food Events, Local Advocate website, Wine Festival, Night
Market Event, Second Day Kitchener Farmers Market.
DAAC members recommend public event calendar printable handout, capability to send phone/text
reminders on events, Patio Crawl passport to carry through entire summer, passport can assist as
calendar and further marketing, change calendar to a handout.
Recommended action: DTK team send out a list of marketing channels to committee.
