HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-03-19 ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES MARCH 19, 2019 CITY OF KITCHENER PRESENT: Shawn Johnston Aaron Francis Meredith Blunt Angela Grasse Paige Downey Matthew Morales Dave Schnider Shirley Madill Linda Zensner Lori Thompson, arrived at 4:40 REGRETS: Lydia Workman Samantha Juhn STAFF: Emily Robson, Coordinator, Arts & Creative Industries Karoline Varin, Program Assistant, Arts & Creative Industries CALL TO ORDER: Aaron Francis 1.0 Acceptance of agenda: agenda accepted as circulated 2.0 Declaration of conflict of interest: none DELEGATION 3.0 None DISCUSSION ITEMS 4.0 Committee vice-chairperson appointment: all Only one nomination was received, thus appointment tabled until next meeting ACTION: Members to email nominations including self-nominations to Emily and/or Karoline prior to next meeting 5.0 Articulating ACAC’s unique perspective: all ACAC members discussed the committee’s unique lens on arts and culture. Members considered articulating a statement about the role of ACAC and provided feedback on tools that would be useful to help facilitate ACAC’s conversations. It was suggested that a discussion should be held to decide on a definition of art and culture. ACTION: ACAC member Matthew to facilitate this discussion at next meeting. 6.0 Innovation in the cultural section: all Staff noted that the Economic Development Strategy, Make It Kitchener, is due for an update. One area of focus of the new strategy will be innovation. Discussion followed about what that may look like in the arts sector. Various examples were given by members of organizations or projects that are taking the lead with innovative programming in the community. It was agreed that successful innovators in the arts:  Are pursuing equity and inclusion  Prioritize a strong community/participatory aspect INFORMATION ITEMS March 2019 - ACAC Minutes 1 ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES MARCH 19, 2019 CITY OF KITCHENER 7.0 City updates: Emily Robson  Recommendation for the purchase of 2017 Artist in residence commission of a mosaic triptych, was accepted by Council  Once ratified, it will be installed at the Kitchener Market  There is a public call for entry for an outdoor staircase mural for the Kitchener Market  Staff are working on drafting a number of public art call for entries and assessing public art proposals coming through the Neighbourhood Development Office grant programs. 8.0 Downtown Action and Advisory Committee: No update as no meeting was yet held, but it was suggested that a representative from BIA come to ACAC to talk about downtown businesses. 9.0 Economic Development Advisory Committee: Shirley Madill The committee discussed the state of small family-run businesses. 10.0 Public Art Working Group: Karoline Varin in lieu of Lydia Workman Artist Ernest Deatwyler, Suzi Gursoy who has experienced homelessness, and members of the KW Homeless Memorial Committee – composed of representatives from organizations that serve those experiencing homelessness – gave a brief overview of the proposal for a memorial and reasons behind it. 11.0 Council Report: Councilor Dave Schnider  Council is looking at the leisure facilities master plan and where new sites might be located  Ever After music festival has been extended to include Thursday night  The space formerly occupied by the store Open Sesame in city hall, is empty and staff will be working with the community to program it for the next year; if members have ideas, they are invited to share with the committee 12.0 Member updates: all Aaron:  Currently curating his grandfather’s vintage photos for a show at Gladstone Hotel Paige: th  The opening reception of the KWSA show will take place on March 24 Shirley:  The lobby at the KW Art Gallery is still under renovation; two more culture talks will th take place, one on April 11, and a second in May  In June, KWAG will be hosting a charrette focused on re-visioning the Civic District as a Cultural District Shawn:  Planning Indigenous People’s Day events (June) Linda:  United Way partnered with Bell Media and Shoppers Drug Mart for Tampon Tuesday on th March 26 at THEMUSEUM where attendees have the chance to see the Flow exhibit ADJOURNMENT: Aaron adjourned the meeting at 5:30 p.m. NEXT MEETING: Tuesday April 16, 2019, 4:00 p.m., Conestoga Room, City Hall March 2019 - ACAC Minutes 2
