Kitchener Cycling and Trails Advisory Committee June 11, 2019
1. Introducing Lisa Chominiec
Overview
Lisa has joined the city’s active transportation team. Lisa Chominiec was previously with
the City of Brantford as their Active Transportation Planner, and before that with the City
of Cambridge as their Transportation Demand Management Coordinator. She has
worked on a number of AT projects from infrastructure planning to educational
campaigns. Lisa has lived in Kitchener most of her life and is very excited to support
the City in becoming more bicycle friendly.
Expectations of Committee
Provide a warm welcome to Lisa and ask questions if you’d like.
2. Update on subcommittees
Overview
At the June meeting, members confirmed their roles on the three subcommittees:
education, advocacy and separated bike lane opening event. The subcommittes were
encouraged to meet in the next month and report on progress at the July KCTAC
meeting.
Expectations of Committee
Subcommittee members are asked to provide an update on their plans and progress.
3. Gaukel Street
From: Melissa Bowman, Sam Nabi, community members
Overview
We will present a vision for transforming Gaukel Street into an urban park, connecting
Victoria Park with City Hall. We will provide an update on how City Staff have been
directed by council to work on this, as well as our community group's plan for a pop-up
park event in September.
The Gaukel Greenway proposal started as an idea on Twitter, catching the attention of
Mayor Vrbanovic and many community members. We had community meetings in
March and April to flesh out the idea and identify stakeholders/supporters. In May, the
concept was endorsed by the Downtown Action & Advisory Committee. In June, we
brought the idea to Council. Council directed staff to assemble a working group to
implement the proposal.
Expectations of Committee
Kitchener Cycling and Trails Advisory Committee June 11, 2019
The KCTAC would be a natural fit for the working group that is soon to be created by
Transportation staff. We hope that by giving you the background on this proposal to
date, you will be in a better position to appoint someone to participate in the working
group. We would like to understand your views on Gaukel Street as an active
transportation facility, and how this proposal can support the existing cycling and trails
network. We would also like to invite the committee to help us plan and activate the
citizen-led pop-up park event.
4. Bikefest review
From: Brynn Dolfi, Marketing and Events Co-op Student, Active Transportation
Overview
There will be a brief presentation about Bikefest, its purpose, what’s been done in the
past, why it’s been put on hold, and the goals for future Bikefests. This will be followed
by a discussion to inform decisions and changes that should be made for Bikefest 2020.
Expectations of Committee
If you have attended at least one Bikefest, please reflect on your experience at the
event, what you enjoyed about it, and what could be improved. Please consider:
- Vendors
- Activities
- Location
- Target audience
If you have not attended Bikefest, please provide feedback on why you haven’t attended
in the past (either from lack of interest, lack of awareness, or other reasons) and what
you would like to see from a bike related event in Kitchener.
5. Cycling & Trails Master Plan – Downtown minimum grid
From: Liz Christensen, city staff
Overview
A connected grid of all ages and abilities cycling infrastructure, with an emphasis on the
downtown, is a key deliverable of the Cycling and Trails Master Plan. City staff will
provide a presentation outlining what a connected, protected and rapid implementation
grid could look like, drawing on examples from other cities and applying concepts to
Kitchener’s downtown. A similar exercise has been conducted with the Community
Working Group that meets monthly on the CTMP.
Expectations of Committee
Kitchener Cycling and Trails Advisory Committee June 11, 2019
The committee will be asked to provide initial input on what a downtown minimum grid
could look like. This is an initial mapping exercise that will inform the master plan, with
more opportunities to define the grid in the future.
6. August bike ride
Overview
At the July meeting, the committee agreed to have an informal bike ride on August 13,
4-6 pm. Daniel Brotherston will bring a proposed route, including some of the separated
bike lanes on Belmont and Queen’s and ending at Graffiti Market.
Expectations of Committee
Committee members are asked to confirm if they plan to attend.
