ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES

The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee met on May 21, 2019, commencing at 4:00 p.m.

2.UN sustainable goals as part of Make IT Kitchener Strategy:H. Abel, Manager,
DowntownCommunity Development
Ms. H. Abel first highlighted the key activities of the Downtown Community Development
team as being:
a)Operations and maintenance of downtown
b)Marketing coordination and community engagement
c)Works with the BIA
d)Developing a collaborative media strategy
e)Business development: making connections between community wants/needs and
downtown developers
As being part of the Economic Development Department, the team is involved in
contributing to creating the new economic strategy to follow in the footsteps of the previous
one, Make It Kitchener. As such, the 17 sustainable development goals developed by the
UN as a blueprint to achieve a better future, are serving as inspiration. Members
contributed their feedback to Ms. H. Abel as towhich goals and why, resonated the most.
INFORMATION ITEMS
3.City updates:E. Robson,Manager, Arts & Creative Industries
Ms. E. Robson informed members that hiring for the FMIMO position willbegin next
month. Some of the key goals for that role will be facilitating film days and locations,
looking at content creation and business partnerships. In other updates, renovation for 44
Gaukel will start in June.
ACTION: a hard hat tour of 44 Gaukel can be arranged for July
4.Downtown Action and Advisory Committee Update: M. Morales
Mr. M. Morales noted that Ms. H. Abel also led the consultation on the UN sustainable
development goals at the committee meeting.

Ms. M. Schneider from Tourism Region of Waterloo provided an overview of 4 areasthat
the region is concentrating on increasing knowledge of when promoting the region as a
destination an arts and culture is one of them.
ACTION: Invite Ms. M. Schneider to ACAC to present.
6.Public Art Working Group: S. Juhn
Ms. S. Juhn indicated that the 2018 artist in residence, Sumaira Tazeen, talked about her
work with female newcomers that resulted in a textile work that is proposed as a
commissioned piece to be sited at Victoria Hills Community Centre. Furthermore, staff
updated on the public artwork by international artist Kim Adams proposed for the Civic
District.
7.Council Report: D. Schnider
CouncillorD. Schnider informed that in the spring of 2020, a Survivor’s Garden will be
installed in Victoria Park. The idea was brought forward by a citizen and its purpose will be
to bring solstice, peace and strength to any survivor who wishes to experience the space.
Councillor D. Schnider also indicated that the city has decided to implement a public winter
sidewalk maintenance reviewand consultation.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
