COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMITTEE MINUTES
CITY OF KITCHENER
The Community Services Committee met this date, under the Chairmanship of Councillor G. Lorentz,
commencing at 1:30 p.m., with all members present except Councillors C. Weylie & J. Ziegler
Others Present: Messrs. R. Weber, T. Clancy, L. Lynch, R. Arnot, T. McKay, T. McCabe, Ms. W.
Hughes, Ms. C. Oliver and Ms. D. Gilchrist
1. CHANDLER MOWAT COMMUNITY CENTRE
Mr. R. Weber introduced this item advising that the Centre had great success over the first year of
operation. He introduced Ms. A. MacDonald, President of the neighbourhood association, Ms. W.
Hughes a member of staff, Ms. D. Wye, House of Friendship and Mr. T. Bender from Community
Services. Ms. A. MacDonald then gave a brief slide presentation showing some of the highlights of
the first year of operation.
Upon questioning by the Committee, Ms. MacDonald advised that since moving into the new facility,
there has been an increase in the number of people served and the number of volunteers. Further,
staff advised that the partnership with the House of Friendship is working well and is unique in the
City.
2. 1997 INTERNATIONAL SOFTBALL CONGRESS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Mr. J. Thompson was in attendance to provide the Committee with some information and
background on the proposal to bring the 1997 International Softball Congress World Championship
to Kitchener. He advised that this is a three stage process, starting with bid development, then
finding a bid committee, which, if successful, would require the formation of a tournament
committee. He also advised that when attending the 1994 Championship in Prince Edward Island
he got a positive impression that the Congress would be interested in awarding the 1997
Championship to Kitchener.
Mr. Thompson further advised that in the new year Council would be asked to do the following:

Insure that the potential bid is properly stacked;
Insure that the actual bid has financial support from the City;
Insure that Capital Facilities currently on the plans for a new stadium complex will proceed on
schedule.
Questions arose as to which complex Mr. Thompson was speaking of, to which Mr. R. Arnot
responded that it was the Blockline Facility which is in the Master Plan and in the Capital Forecast.
If nothing changes in the Capital Forecast, this facility will be completed on time to host the 1997
Championship.
3. PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF WATERLOO REGION
The Committee was in receipt of request from Planned Parenthood of Waterloo Region to proclaim
the week of October 17 - 23, 1994 as National Planned Parenthood Week. This matter had been
placed before the Committee at the request of Mayor D. Cardillo.
On motion by Councillor B. Stortz
it was resolved:
"That we approved the request of Planned Parenthood of Waterloo Region to proclaim the
week of October 17 - 23, 1994 as Planned Parenthood Week."
Mayor D. Cardillo advised that the Mayors office staff would look after this proclamation.

A question was raised concerning Signage in Monarch Woods and Mr. T. Clancy advised that steps
have been taken, as requested by Councillor Weylie; however, this will be an ongoing process.
5. NEXT MEETING
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Community Services Committee will take place on
Monday October 31, 1994, in the Council Chambers, 2nd Floor, City Hall, commencing at 1:00 p.m..
6. ADJOURNMENT
On motion the meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m..
