DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
October 24, 2019 City of Kitchener
The Downtown Action & Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:00 p.m.
Present: Debbie Chapman, David Harmes, Erin Atchison, Geoffrey Guin, Jeannette Makad,
Martin Timmerman, Rick Booth, Sandra Castle, Sarah Marsh, Trisha Smith, William
Turman, Matthew Morales
Staff: Hilary Abel, Marzena Rachwal
Chair: Geoffrey Guin, Chairing
Information Items:
1. New Vice-Chair Appointed
Jeannette Makad and Scott Thomson are nominated for the position of Co-Vice Chair. No further
nominations were received for this position and nominations were declared closed.
2. All Committees Meeting
Ms. M. Rachwal updated the committee on the upcoming advisory committees meeting taking
place on November 6 from 5:30-8:00pm. Attendance list circulated to the committee during the
meeting.
Discussion Items:
1. Marketing Committee Presentation
Ms. L. Muller, Manager of Events and Member Integration and Mr. C. Grimba, Interim Marketing
Manager and Graphic Designer introduce the downtown Kitchener Business Improvement Area
(BIA), the many resources and services, Community Event Grant, and the upcoming 2019 Town
Hall Meeting on November 5, 2019. Ms. M. Rachwal will circulate the invite next week.
2. Public Spaces Working Session
Ms. H. Abel reviews the activity. She explains, the objective is to develop a detailed plan for a
pedestrian first zone in downtown Kitchener. The committee formed three groups; each group
focused on each section of downtown Kitchener. Group 1 (Gaukel Street between Joseph St. and
Charles St. W.), Group 2 (King St., between Ontario St. S. and Frederick), and Group 3 (King St.
between Scott St. and Cedar St.). Each group designed their public space on a graph chart and
present their project.

On motion, the meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
