HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-09-26 DAAC Minutes DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES September 26, 2019 City of Kitchener The Downtown Action & Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:00 p.m. Present: Debbie Chapman, David Harmes, Martin Timmerman, Rick Booth, Sandra Castle, Scott Thomson, Trisha Smith, William Turman Staff: Hilary Abel, Marzena Rachwal Chair: Scott Thomson, chairing Information Items: 1. All Committees Meeting Ms. M. Rachwal updated the committee on the upcoming advisory committees meeting taking thst place on November 6 from 5:30-8:00pm. Please RSVP to Ms. M. Rachwal by October 31. Agenda to follow in an email to the committee. 2. LOKAL Festival th Ms. H. Abel updates the committee on the upcoming festival-taking place on October 10, a link will be emailed to the committee to register. 3. IMPACT Theatre Ms. H. Abel updates on the upcoming series of theatre events taking place on September 26-29. 4. Gaukel Greenway Ms. H. Abel updates the committee regarding furniture setup on Gaukel Greenway taking place from Thursday to Sunday for public use. A survey will be available and distributed for public feedback on how the space should be used as Gaukel on Greenway. Discussion Items: 1. DT Kitchener Development & Construction Areas DAAC members gathered around a wall map as Ms. H. Abel discussed the major development and construction areas in downtown Kitchener, including all City of Kitchener owned parking lots. 2. Pedestrian Mapping Engagement Ms. H. Abel asked the committee for feedback on potential pedestrian street areas in downtown Kitchener between Francis St. N. and Cedar St. S, East to West and South to North, which could be used for C of K future public events. The committee was divided into groups to strategize on potential spots. Results:  Zone 1 – King St. between Ontario St. N. and Frederick St. o Speakers Corner DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES September 26, 2019 City of Kitchener o College students from Conestoga would be connected o Entertainment district o Traffic Stand point – regulatory turning signs prevent vehicles from turning, needs to be addressed with traffic & transportation  Zone 2 – Ontario through to Eby o Concerns/benefits of Queen sSt. Being closed to traffic and Pedestrians crossing it, but less cars, connections to the Museum and centrally located o Having Eby closed – does it impose issues around traffic, directing traffic  Zone 3 – Scott St. to Cedar St., including Eby St. N. o Concerns/benefits being near the market, aligning with previous goals of rebranding King St. E, low traffic impact, and potential to expand along King to Frederick or Queen but cons of not having utility outlets near by  Zone 4 – Joseph St and Francis o Leads into Gaukel and Park  Zone 5 – Joseph and Gaukel o not ideal due to residential Adjournment On motion, the meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m. Next meeting October 24, 2019 @ 4:00p.m.
