The Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee met this date September 12, 2019, commencing
at4:10p.m.
Present: J. Legg, G. Achim, A. Venner, G. Albert, D. Witmer

1. Work plan
SHORE sub committee update G. Albert, G. Achim, and J. Legg
The committee has continued to discuss, with SHORE, their needs related to active fitness
and aquatic prenatal programming: Specifically they were investigating:
1. If there are times of the year that there would be more demand for this type of
programming (there is not)
2. If they have an understanding of the number of people who would be interested in this
type of programming at any one time (3 to 10 people at any given time)
3. Connections to others who support reproductive health/pregnancy in the community.
SHORE actively works alongside several different groups in various capacities.
The Positive Parenting Community Committee which is a part of the new
Children and Youth Planning table
They work closely with the midwifery practices, many of the OB/GYNs, and
places like Monica Place, Marillac place, and Sanctuary
If fitness and aquatic prenatal programming is implemented, SHORE would connect to
partners letting them know that these programs exist.
Next the subcommittee will meet with City of Kitchener Aquatics and Community Centre
staff to determine the feasibility of running prenatal programming at City pools and
community centres.
Action Item: Mark to set up meeting with Community Centre and Aquatics staff, and
SHORE subcommittee to discuss the possibility of supporting prenatal programming
at City of Kitchener facilities.
List of Available Family Doctors update G. Achim
The area hospitals do not keep a formal list of physicians accepting new patients nor is
there any other organization in the City of Kitchener that keeps a list of Family Doctors
accepting new patients.

The subcommittee is developing a letter to send to Mike Seiling, Director of
Building at the City of Kitchener, addressing the existing building codes, and
asking for consideration of the inclusion of gender inclusive washrooms within
the building code.
Subcommittees split up into two groups for continued discussion

Get to know you barbecue was held to introduce and meet all of the 55 members of the
committee
Committee was divided into groups for three separate community workshops in
September
First whole committee meeting to be held in October
