HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-10-15 ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES OCTOBER 15, 2019CITY OF KITCHENER The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee met on October 15, 2019, commencing at 4:00 p.m. PRESENT:All members present, except M. Blunt, P. Downey and M. Morales STAFF:E. Robson, Manager E. Rumble, Coordinator K.Varin, Program Assistant K.Cooper, Manager, Strategic and Business Planning, Office of the Chief Administrator 1.Acceptance of agenda Items number four and five switched. 2.Declaration of conflict of interest None 3.Delegation none DISCUSSION ITEMS 4.Review of suggested structural changes for ACAC meetings: E. Robson As new members will be joining the committee shortly, staff felt it was a good time to rethinkthe structure of the meetings to encourage member input. Staff would like to hear from committee membersabout what their topics of interest for discussion are and what groups they would like to invitefor presentations. This would form one component of the committee’s workplan. Staff suggested that once topics are presented, members would form smaller sub groups to discuss and present theconclusions.Member were receptive to the suggestions. ACTION: Members to start bringing ideas to the November meeting 5.Acquisition of Autolampby artist Kim Adams: E. Rumble E. Rumble summarized the path towards the proposal for acquiring the public artwork entitled Autolampby internationally known Canadian artist Kim Adams.Arts & Creative Industries staff have been working with the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery and the artist to develop this proposal for purchasing the artwork from the 1 percent public art fund, tobe locatedin the Civic District Park. E. Rumble presented the rationaleforpursuing the acquisition,insights into installation and maintenance processes. Staff is looking for ACAC’s feedback and recommendation for purchase. The recommendation will be put forth to the committee to vote on during the November meeting. INFORMATION ITEMS 6.City updates:staff E. Rumble updated the members that the Kitchener Marketmuralis now completed. It is located on the piazza in front of the front entrance designed and executed by local artists Melika Hashemi and Meg Harder, with the assistance of volunteers.In other public art October2019-ACAC Minutes 1 ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES OCTOBER 15, 2019CITY OF KITCHENER news, the KW Homelessness Memorial has received supportfrom staff and it will be included in the tender for Vogelsang Greenand Queen Street renovation. The group who brought the proposal has received an extension for installation from their main funding organization and the install is slated for summer or fall of 2021. ACTION: possibility of presentation to ACAC oncethe Vogelsang redesign goesto tender 7.Downtown Action and Advisory Committee Update: M. Morales Not present. 8.Economic Development Advisory Committee Update: S.Madill The meeting concentrated around the Make It Kitchener 2.0 Economic Development Strategy. During the community consultation event, Ideas of the Brave, cultural production and the importance of arts and culture featured heavily and came up in a variety of ways. 9.Public Art Working Group: K. Varin in lieu ofS. Juhn The October meeting has been postponed to October 21 due to the fact that the regular meeting fell on Thanksgiving Monday. 10.Council Report: D. Schnider CouncilorD. Schnider visited the Kitchener Waterloo Musical Productions space. It is not designated as a performance space under the tax code. This raises questions on how properties used by cultural producers can be assessed to benefit from lower taxes. Councilor D. Schnider raised the question of how this may become a discussion in the region towards the possibility of a formation of a new property tax class. 11.2019-2022 Corporate Strategic Plan Overview:K.Cooper K. Cooper gave an overview of the corporate strategic plan underlining the role of arts and culture. After a number of public and staff consultations, the plan was launched in September identifyingfive key goals:people friendly transportation, environmental leadership, vibranteconomy, caring community and great customer service. Within the five goals, 25 action statements were outlined. The action statements directly referring to arts and culturecan be found under the vibrant economy and caring community goals. Moving forward, staff is looking for the committee’s input and support on realizing the action statements. On November 6, the Compass meeting –an all committees meeting –will be held, where members can speak to how the committee’s work can support the plan.
