ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES
NOVEMBER 19, 2019CITY OF KITCHENER
The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee met on November 19, 2019, commencing at 4:00 p.m.

4.Make It Kitchener Economic Development Strategy 2.0:C. Bluhm and L. Chlumsky
The Economic Development department is currently developing theMake It Kitchener
Strategy 2.0.C. Bluhm underlined that the goal of the plan is to outline resources that
would support an economically, culturally and socially vibrant city of Kitchener for the next
ten years. C. Bluhm familiarizedmembers with theprevious strategy and the public and
stakeholder consultations that are supporting the development of the current strategy.The
consultations clearly indicated a shift from aknowledge-based economy to one focusing on
creativity. L. Chlumsky outlined the results of stakeholder consultation.
Twenty themes emerged, which staffnarrowed down to twelve. These werepresented at
Ideas of the Brave: a large public consultation forumheld in October. These were further
narrowed down to seven key ideas with arts and culture among those identified as playing
an important role in making Kitchener a vibrant city. The next step will be to state clear
initiatives, actions and investments. C. Bluhm invitedmembers to consider how we can
approach this shift from a knowledge-based economy to one which is centered on
creativity.
Membersidentified the following:
-There are art practitionerspast and present from Kitchener with world class talent who
should be supported and recognized; this can happen through various means one
being a showcase or programming with partners in the community
-Artists should be valued for the work they are doing

-This is an entrepreneurial community and we should continue to support and find new
ways of support
-Affordability of space should be addressed
-Accessibility and ease of access of support systemsis a concern
DISCUSSION ITEMS
5.Acquisition of ‘Autolamp’motion:E. Rumble
E. Rumble gavea brief of overview of the ‘Autolamp’ proposal for the benefit of the new
members.On a motion made by A. Francis, the committee unanimously carried the motion
that:
‘The acquisition and installation of artwork at Civic District Park, titled “Autolamp, be
approved; and that the Mayor and Clerk be authorized to execute an agreement,
satisfactory to the City Solicitor, with Kim Adams outliningthe obligations of the public art
acquisition.’

6.Summary of Compass all committees meeting:A. Francis
A. Francis informed the committee that the focus of the Compass meeting was looking at
the 2019-2022 corporate strategic plan and identifying any possible ideas that were not
included. Members from other committees were excited to see arts and culture included in
the plan.
7.Tour of 44 Gaukel:differed to another meeting

8.City updates:K. Varin
Jurying for the public art piece for the DoonPioneer Park Community Centre place took
place in October. Two projects were short listed. Staff is in the process of gathering
additional information from the artists, references and city staff pertaining to specific
questions that arose from the jury.
9.Downtown Action and Advisory Committee Update: M. Morales
None.
10.Economic Development Advisory Committee Update: S. Madill
None.
11.Public Art Working Group: K.Varin
Public Art Working Group has juried artists for the 2020 gallery exhibition program. There
will be ten artists showing their work. The group also juried the 2020 Artist in Residence
submissions. An artist has been chosen, but the official announcement cannot be made
until the New Yearwhen a staff report is taken to Council
