HomeMy WebLinkAboutKCTAC Minutes 2020-01-14 CYCLING AND TRAILS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES CITY OF KITCHENER January 14, 2020 The Cycling and Trails Advisory Committee met on Tuesday January 14, 2020, at 4:00 pm. Present: D. Brotherston, M. Clark, B. Forwell, V. Hand, T. Hannah, G. Piccini, S. Powell, M. Rodrigues, E. Slofstra, W. Waganka, Councillor S. Marsh, G. Kirk, K. Wagler. Staff: A. McCrimmon-Jones, Manager, Transportation Planning L. Christensen, Multi-Use Pathways & Trails Project Manager B. Cronkite, Director, Transportation Services 1. New Year satisfaction survey Aaron McCrimmon-Jones presented the committee with a satisfaction survey asking members to fill it out on their experience so far. Committee members are to take home and fill out and email or return before the next meeting. 2. Lancaster Street follow-up M. Rodrigues gave an update on Lancaster Street, a Region of Waterloo project.  D. Brotherston informed the committee that the same presentation that was presented in November 2019 to the Regions ATAC meeting and that the committee only supported the protected bike lane option.  S. Powell stated that the MTO Bridge and the safety considerations need to be brought to the local MPP. 3. DTK Cycling Passport E. Slofstra presented a downtown cycling passport initiative. She is looking for volunteers from the committee to help with this.  S. Marsh offered to make the connection with the BIA to help promote the passport.  W. Waganka asked when this would be starting and E. Slofstra suggested either Bike Month (June) or pushing to later in summer or early fall.  D. Brotherston suggested adding a calendar with events. B. Cronkite said he thinks the City of Kitchener has done this in the past and will ask D. Kropf to look into this information.  D. Brotherston wondered if this could be a DTK loyalty card or local business.  S. Powell suggested there could be potential to having an app instead of a card. Christensen gave an update on where the City of Kitchener is at in the process with the City and Trails Master Plan. She informed the committee about the vision, goals and strategies and gave an update about the second round of engagement and what was heard from the public regarding the vision, goals and strategies. The master plan is scheduled to be presented to council in April 2020. 5. Committee Mandate A. McCrimmon-Jones presented the opportunity to change the name and mandate of this committee. One proposed option is “Complete Streets and Trails Advisory Committee,” a committee that isn’t just geared to cycling and trails. A. McCrimmon- Jones presented some examples of other cities that have similar committees. A new terms of reference would need to be done.  B. Cronkite shared that one benefit is to have a committee that gears towards safety too.  M. Clark wants to make sure that nothing gets lost in the mix. With adding new elements he wants to make sure we don’t lose sight on the cycling and trails aspect.  S. Marsh sees that this could bring more work to the group. For example all road reconstruction are to become complete streets and could mean the committee might need to review them all. 6. Winter Bike to Work/School week A. McCrimmon-Jones informed the committee about Winter Bike Day on February 14, 2020. The City will be hosting a bike ride and refreshments along the separated bike lanes pilot and will hand out a satisfaction survey and raise awareness. A. McCrimmon- Jones asked for volunteers: W. Waganka, S. Marsh and M. Clark volunteered. 7. Ontario Bike Summit L. Christensen informed the committee about the 2020 Ontario Bike Summit and the City will support the cost for one committee member to attend. Travel and hotel expenses are at their own expense. D. Brotherston was chosen to attend. Meeting adjourned at 5:15 pm.
