The Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee met this date February 13, 2020 commencing
at4:00p.m.
Present: J. Legg, G. Achim, G. Albert, B. Wilson, A. Monteith, A. Venner, the councillors were
both there as well

Discussion Items
1. Inclusion and Belonging Grant
The Afghan Association of Waterloo Region (AAWR) application was discussed. The application
is for funding to help with the cost to host an annual event called Nowruz, which is a traditional
festival celebrating the beginning of spring and starting of the New Year. The event is
multicultural and open to everyone. The goal of the annual event is to bring unity and establish
connections between people of all backgrounds of our communities. Committee member Mr.
W. Rahimi was asked to leave the room while the committee discussed the application. The
committee brought Mr. W. Rahimi back in and asked a few questions about his application and
then was asked to leave a second time while the committee took a vote.

It was resolved:
The committee voted to approve a grant amount of $2000 to the Afghan Association of Waterloo
Region (AAWR) as requested, on condition that
City of Kitchener Staff will hold the cheque until this information is received. AAWR will also be
required to submit a brief report in writing to the Safe and Healthy Advisory Committee upon
completion of their project/event, including a breakdown of how the money was used.

2. Committee Membership Update
Resignation There was a card circulated for resigning committee member. A card will be
mailed to them.

Darwin will attend and Greg offered to attend pending availability. The meeting is taking place

Beth and Lori provided a verbal update. This committee is moving into the 2 phase and
breaking off into smaller groups. . The groups have been defined based on themes generated
by the Task Force. Beth mentioned that community events can be shared at the Task Force so
committee members can forward details to Beth or Lori. Darwin asked when the Task Force is
expected to complete their work and Lori shared that a report and implementation plan is
expected to go to City Council in December 2020.

Beth shared the details of a fundraiser - Soupfest taking place March 18
proceeds will go to KW Habilitation. The tickets are $15 for adults or $10 for children. The
ticket includes 2 or 3 soup samples and more can be purchased for $2. Approximately 10
different restaurants offering soup will be there.
4. Work plan update
It was suggested that the committee regroup at the March meeting to review any outstanding
work plan items and re prioritize based on work completed to date. Amy will invite one of the
Co-chairs of the Rainbow Community Council to the March meeting to present an update on
the Outlook Study.

Beth motioned to adjourn the meeting at 5:30 p.m.
