MINUTES
THURSDAY, JANUARY 14, 1993
PRESENT:
Mike Hiscott (Chairman), Dan Beach, David l~'eure, Martha George, Tito
Guglielmi, Wayne Hussey, Jerry Mclnnis, Atso Saarkoppel, Claude Schneider, John
Tibbits, Alderman Carl Zeht; Tom McKay, and Valerie Gibaut

1. Meeting was called to order at 11:05 a,m~
A hst of local companies that the Economic Development Department are planning to visit in
1993 was circulated. Mike Hiscott suggested if Committee members are interested in
participating on these employer calls that they advise staff who will then inlbrm them as to
the date and time of the planned company visit, IVh~, Gibaut also indicated that some
companies listed might not want a large contingent visiting them. Committee members to
forward lists to Valerie Gibaut.
3. Business and Industry Concerns
Mike Hiscott requested committee members input regarding business and industry concerns,
A lengthy discussion ensued with the following concerns being voiced:
hnpact of planning decisions on industry as it relates to zoning, property values, and
plant operations;
hnpact of development charges with respect to the development industry and local
company expansion;
c. High costs of doing business re: assessment/taxes;
d.
Concerns with time delays in the planning department relating to zoning, rules and
regulations according to the development agreement requirements;
Small or large industriahsts lack of understanding the regulatory role of planning
versus the experienced developer or consultant who understand the planning and
development process; and

Conunch~tm of anti-development versus the need for quahty development which
requires certain rules and regulations in the case of architectural control which
municipalities under the Planning Act do not have authority over.
Mike Hiscott suggested that aH these issues are interrelated and should be adch'essed as a
future business iten~

Committee members introduced themselves and their respective organization~
Canada's Technology Triangle (CYF) Business Community PI'ogram
Valerie Gibaut provided an update to this business proposal She indicated that the working
group recently met with the three area MP's and have won their support~ The next step is the
January 2Sth meeting with senior Ministers to review the proposal and fl' interest is shown,
further talks will continue in an effort to negotiate a deal
