4. Active Transportation Hub
From: Heather McDiarmid, Climate Action WR
Overview
Climate Action WR is running a research pilot project, funded by Federation of
Canadian Municipalities, to explore the feasibility of adding active transportation hubs to
Waterloo region as a means of increasing active travel mode share for utilitarian trips
under 5km. These hubs would be welcoming spaces with targeted supports and tools to
help people choose active means of getting around. Research thus far suggests that
the City of Kitchener would benefit from a mobile active transportation hub. The mobile
hub could help coordinate the delivery of existing programs and also travel to target
communities on a regular basis to fill program gaps.
Expectations of Committee
After sharing research findings, Climate Action WR would like to get feedback from the
committee on the feasibility of the hubs in Kitchener and how the committee and City of
Kitchener might support active transportation hubs and associated programming.
5. Active transportation orientation
From: Darren Kropf, Liz Christensen, city staff
Overview
There’s lots happening in the world of active transportation, cycling and trails! City staff
will provide an overview of the major strategic planning documents guiding staff work.
Please review the following documents in advance:
Cycling and Trails Master Plan
Protected Downtown Cycling Grid
Complete Streets
Expectations of Committee
For information. Questions welcome.
6. Ontario Bike Summit report
From: Daniel Brotherston, committee member
Overview
th
The 12 annual Ontario Bike Summit was attended by over 200 delegates, virtually in
Kitchener Cycling and Trails Advisory Committee
December. Every year, the committee nominates a member to attend on our behalf and
report back on what they learned.
It is also noteworthy that CycleWR received the Organization of the Year award.
Expectations of Committee
For information. Questions and discussion welcome.
7. Workplan development
Overview
At the start of each term, advisory committees are encouraged to brainstorm potential
priorities and projects to form a workplan for the next two years. Returning committee
members will share some of their highlights from the past term.
Committee members are encouraged to review the committee’s Terms of Reference to
ensure ideas are within the scope and mandate for the committee.
A good source of idea generation is the Cycling and Trails Master Plan. Specifically,
Theme 3 Culture includes several actions that could benefit from committee
involvement and leadership.
Expectations of Committee
Come prepared to share 2-3 ideas of things you’d like the committee to focus their time
on for the next two years. More time at the February meeting will also be spent on this
item, to narrow down the list, prioritize actions and determine if sub-committees are
needed to move the work forward.
