Vision Zero From: Faranak Hosseini, Transportation Planning Project Manager, City of Kitchener Overview When councillors and staff talk to Kitchener residents, one of the most common issues raised are concerns about speeding and road safety. Through the Vision Zero project, we want to make the transportation network in Kitchener safer for all ages, abilities and modes of transportation. Vision Zero is a new way of thinking to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries. In Vision Zero, we believe that no preventable traffic related loss of life is acceptable. We acknowledge that humans make mistakes and our transportation network should be designed to account for human mistakes and errors. In Vision Zero we believe that road safety is a shared responsibility among the people who design, maintain, enforce rules on and use roads and intersections. Our Vision Zero strategy will have guidance on building and designing roads, supporting law enforcement, how to educate the public and solutions to the specific concerns in our neighbourhoods. Expectations of Committee We want to hear your feedback, understand your concerns about road safety and hear your ideas on how to make the Kitchener transportation network safer for all road users. 2. General updates From: City staff Overview Staff will provide several active transportation updates from the city, region and province, related to upcoming initiatives, construction and e-cargo bike regulations. Expectations of Committee For information. Questions welcome. 3. National Active Transportation announcement From: Matt Rodrigues, committee chair Overview The Government of Canada has announced $400 million for Canada's first active transportation fund, and the development of Canada's first National Active Transportation Strategy. More information can be found here: https://www.infrastructure.gc.ca/trans/active-actif-eng.html Expectations of Committee Discuss a draft letter prepared by the committee chair to express support for the federal government’s efforts to advance active transportation in Kitchener and across the Kitchener Cycling and Trails Advisory Committee country. The committee may move a motion in support of sending comments to the federal government’s consultations, with copies going to local MPs and City Council. 4. Joseph Street & Stewart Street reconstruction From: Darren Kropf, city staff Overview Joseph Street and Stewart Street are scheduled for reconstruction in 2022. Initial cross- section have been developed, which will form portions of the Transit Hub Trail, connecting the Iron Horse Trail to the future King Victoria Transit Hub and Downtown Cycling Grid. Expectations of Committee City staff will present the proposed cross-sections (also circulated in advance of meeting). Questions and comments welcome. 5. Franklin Street reconstruction From: Darren Kropf, city staff Overview Franklin Street is scheduled for reconstruction in 2022, between Kingsway and Wilson. The Cycling and Trails Master Plan states that Franklin Street would have separated bike lanes between Connaught and Kingsway and a Neighbourhood Bikeway between Connaught and Wilson. Sidewalks currently exist on both sides and many mature trees exist in the boulevards. Expectations of Committee City staff will present the proposed cross-section (also circulated in advance). Questions and comments welcome. 6. National Volunteer Week From: Darren Kropf, Liz Christensen, city staff Overview The National Volunteer Week theme for 2021, The Value of One, The Power of Many, reflects on the awe-inspiring acts of kindness by millions of individuals and the magic that happens when we work together towards a common purpose. Trail standards subcommittee From: Emily Bennett, Barry Tracey, Tom Slomke, Rob Hunsberger Overview The trail standards subcommittee has discussed the various signs on trails and there was consensus that the Iron Horse Trail wayfinding signs were the best in the area and could be looked at as a model for all trails.
