ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES
FEBRUARY 16, 2021CITY OF KITCHENER
The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee met virtually onFebruary 16,2021, commencing at 4:00 p.m.

3.From Behind the Mask Project:Brenda Reid
Ms. Reid shared the inspiration and details about the project she authored. This is a
community art project in Waterloo Region. Quilt blocks and sewing supplies are distributed at
no charge to interested residents who can visually share their experiences during the
th
pandemic. All entries are to be sent back by April 30, whereas they will be assembled by
volunteers into one large quilt. The quilt will be displayed at Homer Watson House and Gallery
in May and may find a permanent home at the Regional Museum.The project isfunded by the
Region of Waterloo Arts Fund and the Love My Hood Kitchener community grant.
Action Item: staff to forward the project website to members

ActionItem:staff to email terms of reference about the committees and notify
committee administrators of the cross-appointments.
6.Committee areas of interest: staff
Staffinvited members to share any areas of interests or concern that can inform the workplan
of this committee and reflect the needs of the arts and culture community. Some key items
were identified:
Need for affordable space for a range of local artists, especially performance space,
black box for film production
A manual/handbook for film
Opportunities for outdoor exhibitions/installations such as sculpture gardens
Cultural directory/resource for artists
Update culture plan: evaluate what has been done in the past
Work with Tourism Commission and Regional Economic Development to market local
artists/cultural organizations
Need for discussion about inclusion: how culture is defined in cultural organizations
Work closer with developers to encourage inclusion ofpublic art in their plans
New grant stream
Giving a voice and platform for young musicians to develop their skills
Further plans for Conrad Centre
How do we promote the arts in the context of economic stimulation

Council approved the acquisition of the Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre public artwork.
Staff is preparing a legal agreement to sign with the artist team in order to start fabrication.
