ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES

The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee met virtually onJuly 20,2021, commencing at 4:00 p.m.

p.m.

4.Affordable Housing:Andrew Ramsaroop, Engagement &Program Manager, Affordable
Housing Strategy; Planning
Mr. Ramsaroop gave a slide presentation on the Housing for Allstrategy. He outlined the
current housing needs, the principles that the strategy is based on and what tools and
resources the city can provide to support the creation of affordable housing.
DISCUSSION ITEMS:
5.Affordable Housing & Affordable Creative Spaces:members
Members noted thatkeeping our talent here is importantand availability of affordable
housing and spaces plays a role.In addition, live-work spaces need to be explored, mixed
usage spaces where art initiative can happen should be included in affordable housing
planning. Members asked if unoccupied spaces in community centres can be used to
create a working space for artists in their neighbourhoods. A suggestion was made to
partner in offering a studio space for a year and position artiststo apply for funding.
ActionItem:staff suggested to inquire with the manager of Community Centres about
possible space

K. Varin provided an update on Queen Victoriamonument which is part of the city’s public
art collection. Itwas covered in red paint prior toCanada Day. E. Robsonandcity staff are
involved in conversation around the piece. Asub-committee within the Reconciliation
Action Plan Working Group, has been formed at the city of Kitchener to lookat current city
street and place naming,and the stories they may communicate. Members are interested
in further discussion about the contemporary role of monuments and stories behind them.
Action Item: staff is toinvitea representative from theReconciliation Action Plan Working
Groupto talk about the workof the committee.
7.Downtown Action and Advisory (DAAC) Committee:J. Paquette
J. Paquette was not in attendance at ACAC.
8.Economic Development Advisory Committee(EDAC):I. Stefanescu
Presentation overview on housing for all. Presentation covered today and how to get
people back to downtown –patios and businesses.
9.Public Art Working Group(PAWG):A. Girard
