Varin, Program Assistant, Arts & Creative Industries GUESTS:AndrewMyles, Textile Magazine Shalaka Jadhav, Textile Magazine 1.Acceptance of agenda Accepted 2.Declaration of conflict of interest None DELEGATION: 3.None PRESENTATIONS: 4.Textile Magazine, 2022 Artist in Residence partnership: S. Jadhav, A. Myles, E. Robson, K. Varin Arts and Creative staff are exploring a pilot partnership with Textile Magazine to deliver the 2022 Artist in Residence. This will allow to expand the artistic disciplines served by the residency as well attempt to remove barriers from accessing the call and selection mechanisms. It would allow for bringing new perspective on the current residency delivery. A. Myles from Textile Magazine gave an overview of how the editorial staff works with the artists, their mentorship strategy and how they approach community collaboration. He underlined that they focus on local topics with local artists and aim to foster opportunities for underrepresented writers that face barriers in publication. S. Jadhav outlined some of the responsibilities of the Textile Magazine in the proposed partnership, namely: Providing perspective in adjudication process Mentorship Expanding opportunities for community facing events and networking Supporting the artist writer in their creative process Publication of artist’s piece in the magazine DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1.McLennan Park public artwork deaccession & policy Amendment follow up:K.Varin, E. Robson, J. Bullock J. Bullock gave a brief overview how a deaccession process typically works in public art galleries and museums. Ms. Varin summarized information gained from following up oncorporate processes for pursuingalternative funding including private, other possible city sites and revisedthe restoration budgetwithconsideration foradditionalmaintenance commitmentsin 2022. Option to solicit in kind support or donations from private donors to support the maintenance of city owned assets, is not supported by internal processes. No site had been identified due to size/weight/height of work and space constraints. Staff underlined that the method and associated process of disposition can be determined with Procurement. Members advised to prioritize inviting solicitations to keep the artwork in the public realm. On a motion made by J.Paquette, seconded by A. Grassethe original motion was amended to: “That the deaccessioning and disposition of the sculptural public artwork titled “Moments”, located in McLennan Park, be approved; and, That the disposition methods prioritize an option that seeks to keep the work in the public sphere Carried INFORMATION ITEMS: 1.Public art programs & other updates: K. Varin The Canoe –an artwork in the city’s public art collection –has been re-installed in its original site at Victoria Park. The sculpture had undergone restoration by the artist. Further landscape formation remediation that are part of the installation, and installation of new signage, are expected to take place in Spring of 2022. 2.Downtown Action and Advisory (DAAC) Committee:J. Paquette The committee discussed safe passage from the LRT and other spaces to the Kitchener Market prioritizing pedestrian spaces based on analyzing usage this past summer. 3.Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC):I. Stefanescu The committee discussed vaccine passport, encouraging vitality in the types of events hosted, reducing red tape for businesses to expanding outdoor spaces for patrons, and how the city might be impacted in changes in tourism. 4.Public Art Working Group (PAWG):A. Girard P. McDonald from the Firm Mural Collective shared insights into mural production and local placemaking opportunities in relation to mural installations. He was joined by a youth R. Robin to discuss possibilities for a legal graffiti wall. Members also discussed the deaccession of the artwork Moments and the addition of the deaccession clause to the city’s public art policy.E. Rumble updated members on release of the Beasting creations around Halloween and activations to follow. 5.Council report:Councilor D.
