ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES
JANUARY 21, 2020CITY OF KITCHENER
The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee met on January 21, 2020, commencing at 4:00 p.m.

DISCUSSION ITEMS
3.2019 Artist in Residence Commission Proposal:MaryNeil
M.Neilis a musician and founder ofKW Junk Music, with the aim to make music
accessible to everyone and to encourage people to think about sustainability.Ms. Neil
shared a presentation of her activities as theartist in residence in 2019. Engagements
included a talk,Spanish social group, Schneider Creek Porch Party and Belmont Village
Bestival. The proposal is to record songs that were created during activities in 2019. She is
requesting $2,000 to record and produce the songs.Committee members expressed
appreciation for Ms. Neil’s work.
On a motion made by A. Girard,seconded by L. Zensner, the committee unanimously
carried the motionthat:
‘That the commissioning of art work by the city’s 2019 Artist in Residence, Mary Neil, be
approved as recommended by the Public Art Working Group.’

4.2020 Artist in Residence Recommendation, Pegman Project:BehnazFatemi
B.Fatemi is an artist influenced by her experience growing up in Iran. Her artwork focuses
on humans and their behaviours. The pegman is the icon used on google maps to switch
from the map to a streetview. The Pegman Project aims to engage people of all ages and
backgrounds in pottery workshops. The artist will guide the participantsto make simple
human-like sculptureslike the pegman. An exhibition will be heldat city hallat the end of
the project, focusing on the immigrant experience.
Committee members affirmed Ms. Fatemi’sproposal and asked several questions of
clarification. B. Fatemiresponded:
•The pottery is a sculpture that people can decorate. Clay is the material used
because it is easy for people to make and a relaxing experience.
•Plansto host one workshop per month.

•Anyone is welcome to participate and will be working with organizations like
Immigration Partnership Council.
•Workshop locations are still tobe confirmed. St. Louis Adult Learning Centrewould
be a great location because there are many immigrants there.
•The exhibition will be in the city hall Berlin Tower Artspace gallery.
On a motion made by L. Zensner, seconded by A. Grasse, the committee unanimously
carried the motion:
‘That Behnaz Fatemi beappointed as the 2020 city of Kitchener Artistin Residence with
her proposal, the“PegmanProject”.’
