HomeMy WebLinkAboutCompass Kitchener - 2022-09-28COMPASS KITCHENER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES SEPTEMBER 28, 2022 CITY OF KITCHENER The Compass Kitchener Advisory Committee met electronically this date, commencing at 4:04 p.m. Present: Ms. J. Stephens -Wells — Chair, Ms. L. Trumper, Ms. M. Goveas, Ms. R. Lavender, Ms. K. Williams, Ms. L. Gazzola, Ms. L. Terry and Mr. W. Rahimi. Staff: A. Fritz -Walters, Engagement Program Manager — Strategic Planning L. Korabo, Committee Administrator 1. STRATEGIC PLAN — DRAFT COMMUNITY PRIORITIES Further to a presentation at the September 7, 2022 Compass Kitchener meeting, Ms. A. Fritz - Walters advised that public engagement including four neighbourhood focus groups continued until September 25th . A themes analysis of all engagement input has now been prepared and is being shared today. Members were also advised that artistic submissions for the new 20 -year vision will be accepted until September 30, 2022. Using a PowerPoint presentation, Ms. Fritz -Walters shared overall statistical highlights from the Engage Platform Ideas Boards commenting on the high number of total visits achieved as well as the quantity of input provided. Members were also shown a pie chart showing the top -of - mind issues for the City to focus on over the coming four years. Top issues were housing affordability, delivering city programs/services and, sustainability. An initial review of input has identified the following emerging theme categories: social; environmental; housing/economy; technology; and engagement/inter-governmental work. Ms. Fritz -Walters also shared two word clouds developed from verbatim comments from a) ideas boards and b) focus group data but also noted that further analysis of comments is still underway. Ms. J. Stephens -Wells inquired if a word cloud has been developed using the Environics survey data and Ms. Fritz -Walters advised this had not been done but she would inquire about this possibility. Using Mural software, Compass Kitchener members participated in an exercise to share their top choices / themes for further consideration as a community priority. All ideas shared were then reviewed and grouped into like-minded subsets and initial identifying titles (priority areas) were discussed. Ms. A. Fritz -Walters and Ms. J. Stephens -Wells will work to further define the Committee's input and finalize major theme categories (e.g. housing; active transportation, etc.). This information will be shared at the upcoming All Advisory Committee meeting to generate discussion and further input. Ms. A. Fritz -Walters then advised that work has continued to develop a Resident Panel and a call for volunteers to apply will be launching before the end of the week. It is intended to bring together a group of 40 diverse residents with a variety of backgrounds and lived experience to collaborate with Compass Kitchener and staff to learn more regarding identified community issues and develop a set of recommended actions that will allow the Strategic Plan's community priorities to be fulfilled. She advised this is first time that actions will be developed by other than City staff. The Resident Panel will meet 4-5 times between November -April to develop their list of recommended actions. It is hoped that some Compass Kitchener members will choose to participate on the Selection Panel to review resident applications. It was agreed the role descriptions for both the Resident Panel and the Selection Panel would be circulated to Compass Kitchener members. 2. FALL ALL ADVISORY COMMITTEES MEETING — FINAL PREPARATIONS Ms. A. Fritz -Walters and Ms. J. Stephens -Wells will develop an agenda based on the input provided by members today. Attendees at the All Advisory Committees meeting will be asked to provide their input regarding any identified gaps and/or share additional views. This input will be added to that gathered via other means to inform the draft list of community priorities to be shared with Council. 3. ADJOURNMENT Ms. J. Stephens -Wells advised she will not be attending the Committee's next meeting; Mr. O. Samad will be chairing. Ms. Stephens -Wells thanked the members of Compass Kitchener for their engagement throughout this term of appointment and expressed a hope that members have applied for re -appointment as continuity of membership is helpful to move the current work forward in a timely manner.
