ARTS ANDCULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES
MAY 17,2022CITY OF KITCHENER
The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee met virtually on May17, 2022, commencing at 4:00 p.m.
PRESENT:All members present, except P. Rojas, J. Paquette and Councilor D. Schnider

3.2022 Artist in Residence selection review: K. Varin
K. Varin refreshed the role of ACAC in the selection of anartist for the 2022 Artist in Residence
program. She outlined the purpose of the residency, the reason for the pilot partnership with
Textile Magazine, the jury process by the Public Art Working Group (PAWG) and requirement for
ACAC’s review prior to presenting to Council. E. Robson mentioned that PAWG continues to
reviewthe program including the resources and budget available, to make additional
recommendations to Council.
4.Equity, Diversity, Inclusion -support for artists:I. Stefanescu
Ms.Stefanescu led the discussion with members on the need for allocating supports toassist
artistswhodo not have funds to access resources to sustain organized growth such as
incorporation. It is important that access to cultural infrastructure is based on equity. Education
about incorporating especially for theatre, media and film is helpful for organizing fruitful
collaborations and accessing funding from non-municipal sources, such as Ontario Trillium
Foundation or Community Foundations. Members also suggested to add the strategic goal of
allocating a budget to support these types of resources in the Culture Plan.

5.City Updates:E. Robson
The city of Kitchener continues to collaboratewith city of Cambridge, city of Waterloo and
Waterloo Region on supporting the development of their individualCulture Plans. Since the cities
and the region share many of the same stakeholders, a call has been posted through the Region
to hire a consultantto aid in that process. This person would reflect onstakeholder inputs to form a
common foundationto allow each municipality and the region to continue with establishingtheir
individual needs. Next step will be planning sectoralengagement.
6.Downtown Action and Advisory Committee(DAAC):J. Paquette

7.Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC):I. Stefanescu
The topic for EDAC was the infrastructure of sports events: looking at facilities, lodging,
transportation and walking distances to events. The conclusion of the discussion was that changes
were needed to improve thisinfrastructure. Next month the committee will focus on tourism and in
June on arts and culture.
8.Public Art Working Group (PAWG):A. Girard
The committeetoured some of the downtown murals and The Homelessness Memorial. Members
also discussed and voted on inviting two artists to show their works in the Rotunda Gallery during
the months of July and August.
9.Council report:Councilor D. Schnider

10.Member updates:S. Stefanescu shared briefly information about the CompassKitchener
meeting.
11.Other business: ACAC currently has three positions open for membership. The current term for
th
members is coming to anend on November 14.A call for applications for committee members
will be available soon. Staff will share the link and further information with members.
