ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES
JUNE 21,2022CITY OF KITCHENER
The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee met virtually on June 21, 2022, commencing at 4:00 p.m.
PRESENT:All members present, except A. Girard, M. Melo,and Councilor D. Schnider; C. Anjari left
the meetingat 5:00 p.m.

3.DTK programming: M. Brown
M. Brown reported that live events are back in full swing. The Downtownteamconsidered the
public appetite for interaction and plannedboth intimate/smaller scale and larger summer events.
They produced a printed/online booklet which was designed by a local artist listing all the events.
The booklet includes a map of patios with the DTK art walk which was coordinated by the
Downtown BIA. The events utilize a variety of spaces including Vogelsang Green and the new
pedestrian area in front of 44 Gaukel. Programming is split between daytime and evening.
Action: staff to email copy of brochureto committee members
3.Bloomberg/Harvard Initiative update: E. Robson
E. Robson summarizedwhat the Initiative entails and its purpose.City staff and community
stakeholders took part in a week-long conference in New York city where groups from other cities
across the worldmet and discussedtheir specific challenges in city building. At itsconclusion,
each city team created a short presentation. The city of Kitchener team identified the need for
more equitable access to cultural resources and developed several interventions to respond to this
need. E. Robson shared the presentationwith members.The group willcontinueto add more
content, validate the ideas explored and integrate with the development of the Culture Plan.
Action: staff to email the presentation to committee members
INFORMATION ITEMS:
4.City Updates:E. Rumble, K. Varin
E. Rumble is working with the KPL to finalize a call for public art proposals for the new
Southwest branch. This includes engaging folks to review wording through an equity lens.
Jurying is planned for the end of thisyear.

The Kitchener Market received a financial allotment from the BIA to realize muralsat the
market. Staff is working on assisting the Market on the process and writing the call for
proposals.
The Beasting project: artist contributions made in the spring are slowly being released
online.
K. Varin presented a short synopsis of proposals from the two shortlisted artists for the
2022 Artist in Residence program.
K. Varin also invited members to the first post-pandemic exhibition at the Rotunda Gallery.
As J. Paquette had to resign as the ACAC representative on DAAC;K. Varininvited
members to consider the position.
5.Downtown Action and Advisory Committee(DAAC):E. Robson
M. Brown also presented the summer festival schedule. A group of individuals were selected for
the new Downtown Community Working Group to strategize alongside DAAC.
6.Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC):I. Stefanescu
A series of presentationswere delivered at the meeting: on development charges, on use of park
spaces, and economic development as pertaining to the city. The presentation on arts and culture
was moved to July.
7.Public Art Working Group (PAWG):K. Varin
The committeejuried the 2022 Artist in Residence proposals.Two artistshave been shortlisted:
the committee directed further questions for clarification and will meet again to make thefinal
selection.
8.Council report:Councilor D. Schnider
Coucilor D. Schnider was absent.
9.Member updates:P. Rojas provided anupdate.
Themeeting was adjourned at 5:30p.m.
