DISCUSSION ITEMS
3.2022 Artist in Residence selection: K. Varin
ThePublic Art Working Group (PAWG) and Textile Magazine juried 12 submissions from
artists for the 2022 Artist in Residence program. There was an increase in submissions
from writers, and 11 out of 12 individuals identified themselves as a member of an equity
seeking community.PAWGshort-listed two artists andstaffreached out with further
questions.Subsequently, PAWG and Textile Magazine recommended the appointment of
Bangishimo Johnston and their proposal “The Medicines We Carry”. K. Varin gave a short
synopsis of the proposed project and the artist’s background.
Bangishimo Johnston is an IndigiQueer Anishinaabe artist originally from Couchiching First
Nations. Their practice as an artist and photographer is strengthened by their roles as a
community organizer and advocate. For the residency, they are proposing a series of large-
scaleportraits that engage the local Indigenous, racialized, and Black communities in their
production with additional community-based activities planned around the series.
The Public Art Working Group and Textile Magazine felt that their proposal best fulfilled the
criteria outlined in the call, and that they would especially benefit from the mentorship
relationship with Textile Magazine.
On a motion made by P. Rojas, seconded by C. Anjaria, the committee unanimously
carried the motion:
‘That Bangishimo Johnstonbe appointed as the 2022city of Kitchener Artistin Residence
