HomeMy WebLinkAboutSafe City - 2000-11-07SAF ECITY~2000-11-07 SAFE CITY COMMITTEE MINUTES NOVEMBER 7, 2000 CITY OF KITCHENER The Safe City Committee met this date commencing at 4:05 p.m., Chaired by Mr. S. Bassanese with the following members present: F. Bishop, T. Dickson, D. Schnarr, Ms. A. Kutler and M. Smith. Ms. T. Beaulne was in attendance for part of the meeting. Others present: Ms. J. Dean, Ms. P. Anderson, Ms. S. Adams, Ms. L. Korabo and Mr. B. Stanley. 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES On motion by Mr. F. Bishop - it was resolved: "That the minutes of October 3, 2000 be approved." 2. SAFE CITY CO-ORDINATOR'S REPORT- November 2000 Ms. J. Dean distributed the November 2000 Safe City Co-ordinator's report to members for their information. The Committee then reviewed the report, which included updates on the following topics: Funding 1. Graffiti Busters Program 2. Muralist Mentoring Program · City-Wide Youth Issues Committee 1. Little Black Book · Safety Audit Working Group 1. Civic Centre Neighbourhood Association · Lighting Working Group- 1. Lighten Up Campaign 3. LIGHTEN UP CAMPAIGN Ms. P. Anderson provided a verbal presentation detailing the November 6, 2000 launch of the 'Lighten Up' Campaign throughout the City of Kitchener. She advised that media advertising had been utilized and an enthusiastic community response received. A package of information detailing the Campaign, dated November 7, 2000, was distributed to all members this date. Ms. Anderson requested that the Committee approve an increase in the budgeted amount for the Campaign from $8,000. to $11,000. Funds will be re-allocated from the Safety Audit Program line of the Safe City budget. On motion by D. Schnarr- It was resolved: "That the budgeted amount for the Lighten Up Campaign be increased from $8,000. to $11,000., with funds being re-allocated from the Safety Audit Program and Implementation account." Ms. J. Dean advised volunteers were needed during the week of November 27, 2000 to deliver thank you cards to homes observed with outdoor lighting. Several members volunteered noting specific areas that could be covered. Tuesday, November 28, 2000 was selected as the date to meet and obtain final instructions concerning distribution of the cards. A dinner will be provided at 5:15 p.m. for those members attending. Confirmation of attendance is required by Linda Korabo prior to November 23, 2000. Please note that the meeting will be held in the Caucus Room, 2nd Floor, Kitchener City Hall. Following distribution of the thank you cards, all residential addresses observed with outdoor lighting in use will be entered into a draw to receive gifts of various lighting products in NOVEMBER 7, 2000 SAFE CITY COMMITTEE MINUTES - 32 - CITY OF KITCHENER = = = = recognition of their participation and assistance community. GRAFFITI BUSTERS WRAP-UP REPORT in making the City of Kitchener a safer Ms. J. Dean circulated a draft report on the Graffiti Busters Program being developed for submission to possible funding agencies. The report provides information on all aspects of the Program and its delivery. She then commented on a recent presentation made at a local elementary school and noted that students were very interested in all aspects of the Program. Ms. Dean will attempt to arrange for additional presentations at other schools. Ms. T. Beaulne entered the meeting. SAFE COMMUNITIES ACTION PROJECT Ms. T. Beaulne advised that she had no further information at this time as there has not been an opportunity for further meeting and discussion on this matter. However, she noted that the Worldwide Opportunities for Women Program (WOW) has begun to speak with people concerning protection of the environment and is also focusing on safety programs for youth. She felt that once the safety program was in place, Safe City could look at ways to expand it and become more actively involved. NEW BUSINESS Ms. T. Beaulne questioned if there was information on any current members that had not re- applied or would not be returning. Ms. J. Dean pointed out that Councillor M. Yantzi would not be returning as he is not running for re-election. Also, it was noted that Ms. N. Brawley had indicated that she would not be re-applying to the Committee. Ms. Dean advised that she had requested thank you letters be sent on the Committee's behalf. Mr. D. Schnarr advised members that applications are still being accepted by the City for appointment to the Compass Kitchener Committee. The deadline for submitting is November 10, 2000.
