FEBRUARY 1, 2005
CITY OF KITCHENER
The Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:05 p.m.
Present:

P. Doherty was in attendance for part of the meeting.

1. INTRODUCTION - CHRISTIANE SADELER
Councillor B. Vrbanovic introduced Ms. C. Sadeler who has been seconded from the Region of
Waterloo for a period of one year. Ms. Sadeler will be the Acting Director, Community
Programs and Services, and will be attending Committee meetings in place of Ms. Adams.
Ms. Sadeler provided members with a brief history of her work involvements and welcomed the
opportunity to provide input to the Committee.
2. WORK PLAN REVIEW
Ms. J. Dean circulated copies of the 2002-2004 Work Plan and the 2004 Report Card. She
provided a history / overview of major items identified in each of the Work Plan categories and
goals, which are as follows:
· Safe City: To make Kitchener look, feel and be safer.
· Social Isolation: To reduce social isolation amongst vulnerable community members and
increase participation in the community.
· Youth: To support the successful transition of our youth from childhood to adulthood.
· Housing: To investigate the municipal role and determine how the Committee can assist in
the creation of safe, appropriate and affordable housing.
Following the presentation, a general discussion occurred during which clarification and
additional information was provided. In addition, members were requested to volunteer for one
or more of the identified projects or suggest new areas of interest to be investigated and
undertaken, if feasible. Ms. T. Beaulne recommended that a Working Group be formed to
review how the Committee could assist in eliminating social isolation as noted in the second
category above. Ms. M. Bowman indicated an interest in incorporating the 'City Hall 101'
document provided to the Committee within the Grade 10 Civics course currently being offered
by School Boards.

With regard to the 911 Youth Charity Golf Tournament, it was noted that the date in 2005 will
be Wednesday, June 29.
3. NEW BUSINESS
Ms. J. Dean advised that she will be away for approximately one month and Mr. Cory Bluhm
will be the staff liason during her absence.
Concern was expressed regarding staff and member availability for the scheduled March 1,
2005 Committee meeting, therefore, consideration will be given to moving the meeting date
and members will be notified.

On motion, the meeting adjourned at 5:35 p.m.
