ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Tuesday June 8, 2004 - 4:00 p.m.
CITY OF KITCHENER
PRESENT: Peter Harris (Chair), Peter Hinchcliffe, Virginia MacDonnell Eichhorn, Sher DiCiccio,
Jennifer Breithaupt, Denis Pellerin, Ron Green, Robert Gissing, Annalee Moore, John
Gazzola, Jo-Ann Hutchison, Erina Harris, Don Chapman.

1. GUESTS
1.1 Ernest Daetwyler, Artistic Director of cafka and the artist creating the Victoria Park
Entrance artwork
· Ernest provided a number of catalogues and pamphlets to ACAC members. The new
catalogue was launched in late May.
· The theme for the 2004 cafka is "Peace of Mind", exploring many themes including the
insecurities found in the world today such as terrorism, political instability, etc.
· All media is represented at the event which is being held this year from September 18-26.
· Cafka is very grateful for its partnership with the City of Kitchener and extends thanks to
Brian Scott and Erina Harris.
· Cafka is working with the Legal Department regarding its responsibilities to City Hall during
the event.
· Ernest extended an invitation to everyone to become a member of cafka.
1.2 Faith Hieblinger, Director/Curator of the Homer Watson Gallery
· Faith provided background on the Gallery and brought ACAC members up-to-date on what is
currently taking place.
· The Gallery has been undergoing extensive renovations. Using a laptop, Faith previewed the
updated website.
· 200/0 of funding for Homer Watson Gallery is raised from private sources.
· Faith asked for advice, feedback and future support from ACAC. Contact Faith at 748-4377.
2. WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM MAY 2004
A motion was made by Ron Green to approve the minutes from the May meeting, seconded by
Peter Hinchcliffe. All were in favour; carried.
3. BUSINESS ARISING
3.1 Culture Plan II Development - Erina
· Plans are underway for the three public input sessions - Erina will send a reminder to all to
attend.
· In coming months, Erina will work with ACAC and community members to create a sub-
committee to work on ongoing Plan follow-up.
3.2 Market Tour - Erina
· ACAC members will meet at the Market on July 21 at 8:30 a.m. to tour the new Market for
interest and to see possible locations for artwork.
3.3 Storefront
· Jennifer noted that staff applied to the Heritage Committee re signage for the Storefront and
were given the "ok" to go ahead. Peter, Denis and Martin to reconvene to complete the
storefront report.

4. NEW BUSINESS
4.1 Provision Grant Assessment - Peter, Peter
· Denis and Virginia, on behalf of the Available Space Art Project, submitted a request for a
$5,000 grant to be used for public relations for the project. Virginia and Denis left the
meeting while the issue was being looked at.
· After a short discussion, a recommendation was made by Peter Hinchcliffe, seconded by
Jennifer Breithaupt, to approve the grant request. All were in favour. Erina will advise
members when this issue will be brought before Council. Virginia and Denis will be advised
by Renate Willms when formal approval has been received.
· Not many requests have been received so far this year.
5. REPORTS
Peter reminded members that other committee reports can be e-mailed to Erina or Linda for
inclusion in the minutes.
5.1 PAWG report - Virginia
· Just a reminder regarding fall dates: October 1 - AIR reception in Gallery; November 12 -
Rotunda anniversary in Gallery (7:00 p.m. in Gallery for both events).
· A lot of favourable input has been received by citizens regarding the "Luggage" sculpture
being installed in Victoria Park.
· City designers are creating a new logo for the Rotunda - PAWG will make final selection.
· Calls for artists for Rotunda shows have gone out.
5.2 DAC Report - Denis
· The graffiti removal process is being reviewed by Julie Dean, Safe City Co-ordinator.
· Members discussed the lack of "old market culture" and available art space at the new
Farmer's Market. ACAC will revisit after Market tour.
5.3 CDC Report - Ron
· Ron informed CDC of Kitchener's CulturePlan II review.
· Erina will be invited to speak at a CDC meeting in the Fall.
6.0 STAFF REPORTS
6.1 Program and Resource Services - Jo-Ann
· Ron Green was nominated for a Senior's of Distinction award - event coming up on June 10.
· Lori Palubeski will be back on June 14.
6.2 Erina Harris - Arts and Culture Co-ordinator
· Virginia is writing an essay for the Artist-in-Residence ten-year show in the fall.
· Art of Politics: This project to showcase artwork by politicians, is still underway.
· Erina distributed a copy of the ACAC Terms of Reference - ACAC will review in September.
· Erina will go to Clerk's to clarify the responsibilities/mandate of both ACAC and PAWG.
· Short discussion on whether ACAC should meet in July and August (voted "no").
A motion was made by Ron, seconded by Virginia, that ACAC not meet in July and August
unless there is an issue that needs to be discussed. All were in favour; carried.

7.0 ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING
A motion was made by Denis, seconded by Annalee, to adjourn the June ACAC meeting. All were
in favour.
The next ACAC meeting will take place on September 14th at 4:00 p.m in the Schmaltz Room at
Kitchener City Hall.
