REGRETS: Martin DeGroot, Virginia MacDonnell Eichhorn, Jan Bockmaster, Isabel Cisterna. 1. GUESTS 1.1 Timothy Schmaltz, Kevin Schmaltz, Tony Fry, Glen Richardson, William Sleeth RE: Firefighter's Memorial · This delegation attended the meeting to inform ACAC of the intent to create and install a sculpture dedicated to local Firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to request endorsement of the proposal. · The original will be sculpted in clay and cast in bronze by artist Timothy Schmaltz. · Timothy explained the concept of the sculpture and showed a sketch of the proposed piece. The location chosen for display is Civic Centre Park beside the Centre in the Square. · The plan is to fundraise the projected cost of $100,000 and to create a fund for future upkeep - $30,000 has been raised thus far. · Installation is expected in the Fall of 2005. · An open invitation was extended to ACAC members to drop by the artist's studio to see the work in progress (The studio is located at 283 Duke St W; 1-800-590-3264 or 742-1803 on weekends. Give Timothy a call and drop by to watch him work on the piece). A motion was made by Robert Gissing, seconded by Sher DiCiccio to endorse the creation and installation of the Firefighter's Memorial to be installed in Civic Centre Park. The group is applauded for this initiative and for supporting public concerns with original artwork. 2. WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM MAY 2004 A motion was made by Ron Green to approve the minutes from the June meeting, seconded by Denis Pellerin. All were in favour; carried. 3. NEW BUSINESS 3.1 Grant Sub-Committee Presentation of Provision Grant - Peter Harris Two grant submissions were received this time. · The Tamil Cultural Association requested $3800 to hold an event at the University of Waterloo; the Grant Sub-Committee recommended that $3303 be covered by the City based on eligible costs. · The Canadian Authors Association asked for $5000 to help with a multi-day workshop to be held at the Walper. The money will be used to sponsor local writers to attend the conference and for a local reception event. The sub-committee agreed to endorse the full request of $5000. All ACAC members were in favour of endorsing the recommendations made by the Grant Sub- Committee; carried. 3.2 AIR and Four New Members - Erina · Tony Urquhart was selected as the 2004-2005 Artist-in-Residence. · Four new members have been added to PAWG: Diego Escalier, Lauren Hall, Tiffany Tyo, Sheila McMath, as supported by ACAC at this meeting. \September 2004 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Tuesday September 14, 2004 - 4:00 p.m. · A report will be presented to Council presenting the PAWG Terms of Reference and asking for the endorsement of three-year terms for committee members, as is requested for all standing committees. Also, a request will be made to grant official recognition to PAWG as an ongoing sub-committee of ACAC, reporting to ACAC on all financial decisions, adjudications and membership. 3.3 Glassblowing Equipment - Erina · The appraised value of the glassblowing equipment was $10,955. An artist from St. Catherine's purchased the equipment at the auction, for the price of $9,055 and will use the equipment to establish a studio. 3.4 Storefront Suggestions From Sub-Committee - Denis · cafka starts September 18 and runs until September 26. · Art for the Available Space Art Project is being stored at KDBA. Positive feedback on the project is being received from area businesses. A PowerPoint presentation will be put together showcasing before and after photos. John Gazzola suggested making a presentation to Council on a night when it will be broadcast on cable. · Your Kitchener Storefront Report: This was a suggestion that was originally part of the first CulturePlan. The current location in the old hydro building is an impressive one. Traffic into the store is good and more information is coming in for display. The K-W Society of Artists is selling art in the store and a long term plan is to have computers for people to search out information on area tourism. A report lists the final requirements needed for its effective presence as a cultural resource (prepared by Martin, Peter and Denis). 3.5 Bullas Sculptures - Erina · The City, which owns the Bullas Fountain, plans to install it as part of the renovations taking place on Gaukel. Before anything can be done, repairs are needed to the sculpture. · The sister of the artist asked that, following restoration, the fountain be cast in bronze so that the piece on display will last. PAWG recommends having the piece bronzed and ACAC was asked for its endorsement as well because this is the only way to properly preserve it. · Following discussion, members suggested that the restoration of the piece be tendered. · If approved, money for the restoration and casting will come from the Building budget. A motion was made by Annalee, seconded by Ron agreeing that the Bullas Fountain be bronzed following restoration. As well, a motion was made by Ron, seconded by Sher suggesting that restoration of the fountain be opened to public bid. All were in favour of the motions; carried. 3.6 CulturePlan - Erina · Notes drafted from the CulturePlan meetings are being mailed to those who attended. · The website is up and running. · A formal update will be made to ACAC in November and the plan will be presented to Council in the new year. · Sixty-eight recommendations have been included in the five-year plan so far. 4. REPORTS 4.1 PAWG report - Erina · See 3.2. \September 2004 - ACAC Minutes 2 ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Tuesday September 14, 2004 - 4:00 p.m. 4.2 DAC Report - Denis · Glen presented the Firefighter's Memorial at the last meeting as well as an overview of the Downtown Strategic Plan. · The Storefront will be continued with the current/new CulturePlan. 4.3 CDC Report - Ron · Ron mentioned the draft of the City of Waterloo Collections Policy. · The old train station is being used as a tourism office. 5.0 STAFF REPORTS 5.1 Program and Resource Services - Lori · J.M. Drama provided a successful children's program this year. · A new roof has been installed at KOR. · The Woodworking Group met with Waterloo to discuss joint service with Waterloo. 5.2 Arts Update - Erina Harris · October 1: AIR ten-year anniversary - all welcome~ · One Book, One Community upcoming. · Word on the Street upcoming. 5.3 Events Update - Don · Fifteen events were held over the summer beginning with the Multicultural Festival which attracted 75,000 people over two days. Blues, Brews & BBQ's drew 25-30,000. · Tim Horton's has renewed a multi-year partnership with KidSpark, which this summer, had over 25,000 in attendance. · The New Kitchener Market opens on September 25 and the Third Annual Word on the Street takes place on September 26. · The Special Events area is starting a strategic business review. Staff and a project team are looking at delivery of events and how we work in the community. A report will be made to Council in the new year. Public feedback received from CulturePlan II will be used in the review. 6.0 ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING A motion was made by Annalee, seconded by Sher, to adjourn the September ACAC meeting. All were in favour. The next ACAC meeting will take place on October 12th at 4:00 p.m in the Schmaltz Room at Kitchener City Hall. \September 2004 - ACAC Minutes 3
