1. CUL TUREPLAN II - INTRODUCTION
Ms. Erina Harris, Arts and Culture Coordinator, provided a history of the CulturePlan document
noting that the first Plan had been completed in 1996. The focus of CulturePlan II is to identify
and invest in culture and diversity, corporately and City-wide in order to sustain a healthy and
vibrant city. The CulturePlan II draft includes 58 recommendations and an integrated five-year
strategic plan for arts and culture based on public input and also identifies implementation
strategies in a collaborative work plan involving residents and stakeholders.
The draft document is the result of an extensive inclusion process which ultilized stakeholder
questionnaires and interviews, public forums and research. It was noted that the Plan
recommendations follow three specific streams: community development; economic
development; and, programming.
Ms. Harris advised that she is interested in obtaining the Committee's feedback and would
relay any comments to the Steering Committee. Further opportunities for Safe and Healthy
Community Advisory Committee members included: leadership; integration; and,
collaboration. She referred to a listing of community values and principles included in the draft
Plan which could be reviewed when consideration is given on how to advocate on behalf of
CulturePlan II.
In closing, Ms. Harris requested that a Committee member be appointed to attend an
upcoming public meeting to represent the views of the Committee.
Members of the Committee provided input concerning: the timing of the Plan; incorporation of
an inter-active museum highlighting Kitchener's historical artifacts; the total cost of
implementation; the success of CulturePlan; the apparent omission of sports as part of the
community's cultural framework; and, promotion and awareness.
Messrs. A. Bender and C. Schneider volunteered to attend the upcoming public input session
on May 27, 2005, to raise comments made this date by the Committee. All members were
urged to attend the June 27, 2005 presentation to Council.

5. WORK PLAN 2005-2006
Updates on the following Work Plan initiatives were provided:
· Violence in Sports - minor soccer will be the the focus of the proposed Violence Prevention
Program. A meeting with soccer administration will be held in the near future and a
proposal will be presented to incorporate the City's plan into the training minor soccer
already offers to its coaches. It was noted that with 3,000 registered soccer players, this
would be a large undertaking.
· Youth Issues Grants and Awards - presentations will be on May 30, 2005.
· 911 Youth Charity Golf Tournament - is being held June 29, 2005 at Rockway Golf Course.
Posters for the event have been distributed and thank you letters have been prepared for
those providing prizes.
· Safey Audits - none scheduled at this time; however, it was noted that a meeting had been
held with a large local employer who expressed concerns regarding employee safety.
Waterloo Regional Police will conduct a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
(CPTED) audit of the area in question and will continue to meet with company
representatives. A request was made to conduct safety audits of subdivisions adjacent to
parklands and Councillor Vrbanovic suggested that he and Mr. D. Schnarr draft a
communique to neighbourhood associations advising that this type of review is available to
them.
· Youth Website - Kitchener Youth Advisory Council (KYAC) has agreed to do ongoing
maintenance of the site once it is launched; launch scheduled for the Fall 2005.
· Social Isolation and Inclusion - group has met and has begun review of five inclusive city
reports to identify similar safe and healthy processes.
· Youth Mentoring - P. Doherty requested that this issue be expanded to include mentoring
for all ages, not just youth. He referenced examples of coaches being mentored who then
pass along what they have learned to the youth they are coaching.
Ms. C. Sadeler suggested a possible matter for future consideration, being a guide similar to
the Little Black Book produced for youth, but aimed at seniors in need.
