HomeMy WebLinkAboutSafe & Healthy - 2005-05-03 SAFE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES MAY 3, 2005 CITY OF KITCHENER The Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:08 p.m. Present: Co-Chair, Councillor B. Vrbanovic. M. Bowman. P. Doherty, S. Fohring, M. Harris, C. Schneider, A. Bender, D. Schnarr, B. Thomlison, S. Franzen, T. Beaulne. Staff: C. Sadeler, Interim Director, Community Programs and Services J. Dean, Safe City Co-ordinator L. Korabo, Committee Administrator 1. CUL TUREPLAN II - INTRODUCTION Ms. Erina Harris, Arts and Culture Coordinator, provided a history of the CulturePlan document noting that the first Plan had been completed in 1996. The focus of CulturePlan II is to identify and invest in culture and diversity, corporately and City-wide in order to sustain a healthy and vibrant city. The CulturePlan II draft includes 58 recommendations and an integrated five-year strategic plan for arts and culture based on public input and also identifies implementation strategies in a collaborative work plan involving residents and stakeholders. The draft document is the result of an extensive inclusion process which ultilized stakeholder questionnaires and interviews, public forums and research. It was noted that the Plan recommendations follow three specific streams: community development; economic development; and, programming. Ms. Harris advised that she is interested in obtaining the Committee's feedback and would relay any comments to the Steering Committee. Further opportunities for Safe and Healthy Community Advisory Committee members included: leadership; integration; and, collaboration. She referred to a listing of community values and principles included in the draft Plan which could be reviewed when consideration is given on how to advocate on behalf of CulturePlan II. In closing, Ms. Harris requested that a Committee member be appointed to attend an upcoming public meeting to represent the views of the Committee. Members of the Committee provided input concerning: the timing of the Plan; incorporation of an inter-active museum highlighting Kitchener's historical artifacts; the total cost of implementation; the success of CulturePlan; the apparent omission of sports as part of the community's cultural framework; and, promotion and awareness. Messrs. A. Bender and C. Schneider volunteered to attend the upcoming public input session on May 27, 2005, to raise comments made this date by the Committee. All members were urged to attend the June 27, 2005 presentation to Council. 2. FEDERATION OF CANADIAN MUNICIPALITIES - COMMUNITY SAFETY AND CRIME PREVENTION - UPDATE Councillor B. Vrbanovic provided a summary of topics addressed by the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Council of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities at a meeting held in February, 2005. 3. COMMUNITY POLICING IN CROATIA Councillor B. Vrbanovic advised that while vacationing in Croatia he was made aware that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were also in the country sponsoring and conducting training sessions on community policing. 4. HEALTHY COMMUNITIES PLAN - UPDATE Mr. B. Thomlison provided an update of discussions underway concerning the Healthy Communities Plan noting that it will be finalized in the Spring of 2006. SAFE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES APRIL 5, 2005 - 12 - CITY OF KITCHENER 5. WORK PLAN 2005-2006 Updates on the following Work Plan initiatives were provided: · Violence in Sports - minor soccer will be the the focus of the proposed Violence Prevention Program. A meeting with soccer administration will be held in the near future and a proposal will be presented to incorporate the City's plan into the training minor soccer already offers to its coaches. It was noted that with 3,000 registered soccer players, this would be a large undertaking. · Youth Issues Grants and Awards - presentations will be on May 30, 2005. · 911 Youth Charity Golf Tournament - is being held June 29, 2005 at Rockway Golf Course. Posters for the event have been distributed and thank you letters have been prepared for those providing prizes. · Safey Audits - none scheduled at this time; however, it was noted that a meeting had been held with a large local employer who expressed concerns regarding employee safety. Waterloo Regional Police will conduct a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) audit of the area in question and will continue to meet with company representatives. A request was made to conduct safety audits of subdivisions adjacent to parklands and Councillor Vrbanovic suggested that he and Mr. D. Schnarr draft a communique to neighbourhood associations advising that this type of review is available to them. · Youth Website - Kitchener Youth Advisory Council (KYAC) has agreed to do ongoing maintenance of the site once it is launched; launch scheduled for the Fall 2005. · Social Isolation and Inclusion - group has met and has begun review of five inclusive city reports to identify similar safe and healthy processes. · Youth Mentoring - P. Doherty requested that this issue be expanded to include mentoring for all ages, not just youth. He referenced examples of coaches being mentored who then pass along what they have learned to the youth they are coaching. Ms. C. Sadeler suggested a possible matter for future consideration, being a guide similar to the Little Black Book produced for youth, but aimed at seniors in need. 6. NEW BUSINESS Ms. C. Sadeler advised that the Annual Justice Dinner is being held on Thursday, May 19, 2005 at Bingeman's and she invited members of the Committee to attend the event. 7.
