ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Tuesday June 14, 2005 – 4:00 p.m. CITY OF KITCHENER

1.APPROVAL OF MINUTES AND REVIEW OF AGENDA
A motion was made by Jennifer, seconded by Robert, to accept the minutes of the May meeting
as well as the June agenda. All were in favour; carried.
2.BUSINESS ARISING
2.1Mural on Schreiter Building
?
The mural on the Schreiter Building was taken down and is being stored until a use for it is
found.
2.2Introductions
?
Sheila McMath was welcomed by the committee; introductions were made. Sheila will give
the PAWG report at future meetings.
3.NEW BUSINESS
3.1 Healthy Communities Working Group – Peter
?
Four meetings have been held so far. Every City group is represented on the committee,
which will be broken into teams for discussion.
?
This is an exercise in systems design, looking at the physical environment and the economic
and social structure of the community. The goal is to have a smoothly working system in
place by next year.
?
The project ends in March.
4.2 Culture Plan II Update – Erina
?
The Culture Plan document has been reorganized and revised to include all feedback received
from public input, and now includes a section on design as well as a business case.
4.3 New Library – Erina
?
Approval was given to build a new library in the Centre Block. Discussions are underway with
investors. It is possible that the steam engine, Hazel, may be included in the design.
Timelines are not known.
4.4 Steam Engine Update – Erina
?
The steam engine is being dismantled. Robert noted that he is interested in documenting on
film, the dismantling, removal and storage of the piece.
5. REPORTS
5.1 Public Art Working Group (PAWG) Report – Erina
?
The PAWG logo is being finalized and will be brought to ACAC. The logo may have to be
approved by Council as it is an official logo.
?
Some public art projects are on hold as there is a need for staff resources.

The Stanley Park Community Centre and library are under way. Chandler Mowat Community
Centre and an expansion to the Victoria Hills Community Centre are new projects to be
started in the near future.
?
Sheila McMath is the out going ASAP installation coordinator and Soheila Esfahani has now
officially taken the position.
?
A mural was done across from the new market, on Eby and King.
?
Rohan Thompson, City of Kitchener Youth Co-ordinator, is working with kids “Free Spirit
Group”, waiting for approval to start.
?
The Artery will talk with the City to see if they could renew their lease for another year.
There is an issue with the cost of utilities that needs to be worked out.
5.2 Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) Report - Denis
?
No report.
5.3 Cultural Development Committee (CDC) Report - Ron
?
Waterloo Stage made a bid to buy building to use probably as some kind of arts – preferably
theatre. Looking at cost involved to bring up to code. Talking to groups to see who would
make use of it.
?
Train station officially opens on June 16 as a Heritage &Visitor Information centre.
?
Arts and crafts sale on hold July 1 – not enough vendors – will look at different date for next
year.
5.4 Waterloo Region Arts Council (WRAC) Report – Martin
?
No report.
5.5Staff Reports
5.5.1 Program and Resource Services
?
KOR is developing a project for youth services/market.
?
CPII – Lori is overseeing logistics of steam engine
?
Homer Watson held their Annual General Meeting and is moving forward on the Coach
House.
?
Members had several questions regarding the recording equipment at KOR which Erina will
direct to Lori for a response. b
6.0OTHER
?
No ACAC meeting will be held in July. ACAC will meet again on August 9.
7.0 ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING
A motion was made by Denis, seconded by Graham, that the June meeting be adjourned. The
next ACAC meeting will take place on August 9 at 4:00 p.m. in the Schmaltz Room at Kitchener
City Hall.
