COMPASS KITCHENER COMMITTEE MINUTES
September 21, 2005CITY OF KITCHENER
The Compass Kitchener Committee met on this date, commencing at 4:10 p.m.
Present: Glen Woolner, Trudy Beauline
Staff: Shelley Adams, Carla Ladd, Michael May, Rosemary Pitfield, Glynis Martin
Regrets: Don Bourgeois, Douglas Parker, Pat Doherty, John Hall, Paul Royston, Trudy Bunting
Compass Kitchener will be making a 12 to 15 minute presentation to Council on October 3 with
questions on top for a total of 30 minutes. At the end of question period, two slides will be presented
on the process for unveiling this information to the community. A suggestion was made to have
Council self identify to start our presentation. This could be done if Council was informed and their
permission gained ahead of time. Maybe having council members self identify would be a good way
to launch the media program in November. At this meeting we went through Environic’s September 7
presentation page by page toward confirming October 3 presentation to Council.
?
Combine methodology and sample slides (slides 3 and 4)
?
Show age slide and 60% own their own homes (slides 5 and 6)
?
Keep gender slide
?
Start with what people dislike about Kitchener and then show what people like about Kitchener
?
Can Barry give us top 5 topics under likes and dislikes to show more detail
?
Change order of slides, first citizen satisfied (slide 10), satisfied with municipal services (slide
12), satisfied with City of Kitchener government (slide 13), like about Kitchener (slide 11),
dislike about Kitchener (slide 22)
?
A suggestion was to overlay slides – spending, satisfaction and familiarity to facilitate
understanding
?
E.g, how many people use services, are you satisfied, and willingness to spend money for
services
?
Perhaps view by quadrants, i.e., use upper right quadrant – high familiarity, generally satisfied
and like spending or go with bar chart
?
This could be too easily misinterpreted
?
Explain what the dislikes chart means, say it better; e.g., inner congestion vs. outward for
traffic
?
For segmentation use “community” label, not personal ones -
?
Some possible suggestions for segmentation were:
Group 1 – urban promoters
o
Group 2 – small town protectors
o
Group 3 – fringe dwellers
o
Group 4 – small town stalwarts
o
Group 5 – community activators
o
Group 6 – suburban stability seekers
o
?
We will ensure we do not misrepresent these groups
?
Each category will have a description – particular attributes, stand on growth, finance, tax,
identity of them, proportion of population
?
We need a communication strategy regarding how we use segmentation data as a spring
board to the community engagement
?
Process – communications, goals of engagement

?
Use segmentation information to get people involved; get them to go on line to self identify,
have terminals available, short paper copy to get more people involved, etc.
?
Put self identify survey in Your Kitchener which comes out mid November
?
Launching overall program in November to the community and dialogue
?
Name of launch is, “Who are you Kitchener?”
?
Gives us a picture of who we are
?
Maybe have buttons with names on it or ribbons; it is a good way for people to start to
introduce themselves to one another
?
We have to be careful that we are inclusive in our approach; using the information to engage
people in their own community in a way that is comfortable for them
?
We will use a phased approach
1. Confirm vision, satisfaction, report card, tease out identity
2. Growth management
3. What does this mean for 2007-09 budget
?
Descriptions of labels should be accurate and fun
