January 4, 2006 CITY OF KITCHENER
The Compass Kitchener Committee met on this date, commencing at 4:05 p.m.
Present: Don Bourgeois, Glen Woolner, Pat Doherty, John Hall, Tamara McBride, Philip Awere-
Gambrah

1. Background
• A quick presentation on what "Who are you, Kitchener?" for background information
• The purpose for this meeting is to go through handouts that will be distributed at citizen
engagement process and to discuss different roles played by Compass Kitchener
members, staff and volunteers
2. Review of volunteer schedule
• Tracey circulated a volunteer sign-up sheet for January public meetings
• She also gave each volunteer a copy of their individual schedule with date, location and
time
3. Website
• The website is live
• The address will be advertised at the launch on January 10
• Residents can get info from the website and provide staff with comments
4. Official launch
• Media launch at Fairview Park Mall on January 4 at 10:00 am
• Posters, ads, brochures will be delivered to community centres, arenas, etc.
• There will be 3 banners on King Street at different locations
5. Self ID quiz
• Volunteers will distribute the self identity quiz at each venue for people to fill in; they do not
need to be returned
6. Information booth
• Instructions for information booth/set up was distributed by Jana and Kate
• Volunteers will be provided with a Q&A for quick reference. If people have questions on
details of the citizen engagement process, they will be referred to the website
• This is the first time the city is using information booths so it is unique to us!
• The purpose for these booths is to get/give info to the public
• The vision chart will be distributed at these booths and can be returned at people's
convenience
• Ballot boxes will be at the City Hall rotunda for this purpose; forms can also be dropped off
at community centres and other city businesses

• People will be encouraged to fill in the vision chart only once
• The booth won't fit in the Pat Doherty Arena so we have to be flexible in how we hand out
info and engage the citizens
7. Public meetings
• Meetings will be advertised in newspapers and website
• Agendas for meetings of different times were handed out; 35 minutes for civic classes,
public meetings of 1, 1.5 and 2 hours
• The budget exercise links to the vision and identity of Kitchener, and responses will serve
as a platform for future consultation specific to a financial plan for the city
• If time is limited, groups can work together on either the budget exercise or vision chart
8. Questions and answers
• The group discussed alternate ways to respond to questions from aggressive and/or irate
people
• Posters will be put up in City facilities advertising the process and meeting dates
• There are three ways to gather information -website, public meetings/workbook, and the
vision chart
• Carla praised the team for their hard work on this project and pulling it together in such a
short period of time
