HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts & Culture - 2002-05-14 ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Tuesday May 14, 2002 - 4:00 p.m. CITY OF KITCHENER The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee met this date, chaired by Ron Green, with the following members present: Michael Galloway, Martin DeGroot, Glen Sou lis, Denis Pellerin, Robyn Schuller, Fred Bishop, Mike Peng, Isabella Stefanescu, Sher DiCiccio, Erina Harris, Lori Palubeski, Don Chapman, Linda Pretty (Recorder). 1. WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM MARCH 2002 A motion was made by Fred Bishop, seconded by Mike Peng, that the minutes from the April meeting be approved. All were in favour; carried. 2. DELEGATION - Adrienne McQuay, Director of the Children's Art Program Adrienne McQuay attended the meeting to request support from ACAC for a grant proposal to the City of Kitchener for $1000. The Art Program, which operates out of Calvin Presbyterian Church, provides music and theatre day camps to approximately 100 children each summer. The program is operated through program fees, contributions, fundraising and grants. Ms. McQuay responded to several questions by ACAC members and subsequently left the room so the issue could be discussed. ACAC members felt the grant request didn't meet City guidelines for funding and should be refused. Don Chapman noted that there could be a link between KidSPARK and certain aspects of the Children's Art Program and that he is prepared to extend $500 to the program in exchange for their participation in KidSPARK. ACTION: ACAC members did not support the funding request for the Children's Art Program. However, Don Chapman will offer $500 from the Special Events Operating Budget and will meet with Adrienne to discuss co-operation with KidSPARK. 3. BUSINESS ARISING 3.1 Work Plan - Lori P . Lori reviewed the Draft ACAC Work Plan. Discussion took place and members indicated their priorities and made several suggestions for additions/changes. See attached for updated Work Plan and outcome of discussion. . Future direction? . A suggestion was made to invite a staff person to an ACAC meeting to discuss the storefront issue and to give a broader view of developments in the City. It was noted that Carla Ladd, Director of Corporate Research and Planning (City of Kitchener) would be the most appropriate person to invite to a meeting. Fred motioned that a representative from the Multicultural Centre be invited to become a member of ACAC. Following discussion, the motion was amended by Denis to suggest that ACAC submit a letter to the Multicultural Centre asking for support to attend ACAC or to potentially form a partnership. ACTION: 1. Erina will draft a letter to the Multicultural Centre as noted in the Motion. 2. Lori will invite Carla Ladd, Director of Corporate Research and Planning, to attend the June ACAC meeting. Lori thanked everyone for their involvement and distributed volunteer pins. 3.2 Kaufman Contamination Report - Lori * \May 14/02 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Tuesday May 14, 2002 - 4:00 p.m. 3.3 Regional Foundation Community Structure Progress Report - Martin . Update on Master Plan - Final report is expected soon. There will be a brief turnaround time for comments. The work on this committee is done. . Report - $80,000 will be distributed through the Foundation. Next step is to set up the Foundation and distribute funds. The Committee will develop policies and guidelines as it develops. Need to get the word out that the money is available. 4. REPORTS 4.1 PAC Report - Isabella (i) Public Art Working Group - Name Selected . The name "Public Art Working Group" was recommended by ACAC and approved. (ii) Artist-in-Residence Commission - Status . Andrew Wright will install his ACAC and Council-endorsed AIR commission at Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre. (iii) Artist-in-Residence Sandra Martin - Status . Council has endorsed Sandra's tenure. Opening ceremonies will be held on Thursday May 30- invitations will be sent. All are welcome!! 4.2 DAC Report No report. 4.3 Staff Reports 4.3.1 Erina Harris (i) Forest Heights Pool Adjudication (update) . Artist Carol Bradley has been selected by the jury of the Forest Heights Pool commission. The budget for the art will be revisited to accommodate a suggestion by the jury to make the piece slightly larger than was suggested Report to follow when all information has been made available. (ii) Heather Kocsis Exhibition at City Hall (update) The reception for the exhibition will be on May 15 from 4:30-7 p.m. All are welcome. (iii) KCI Student Exhibition at City Hall (Denis - update) . On May 27 and 28, there will be an presentation of art produced by KCI students - Opening Ceremonies will be on May 27. Invitations will be sent. Criteria for liability has been met. It is the first time the students have had a venue such as this to display their work. Sandra Martin will be asked to attend to critique. (iv) Rotunda Gallery Exhibit in May - Sandra Martin (update) . The Artist-in-Residence exhibit is displayed in the Rotunda. (v) PAWG Terms of Reference . ACAC endorsed PAWG's request to have membership on the committee extended to two years, hence PAWG Terms of Reference is now fully endorsed. \May 14/02 - ACAC Minutes 2 ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Tuesday May 14, 2002 - 4:00 p.m. 5.3.2 Don Chapman (i) KidSPARK . Don provided a description of the events occurring during KidSPARK. (ii) Word on the Street . If funding is received from "Word on the Street", the event will go ahead this year. Regardless, a literary festival will be held on September 27. More information to follow. (iii) One Book - One Community . Copies of "No Great Mischief" by Alastair McLeod, have been distributed to Council members and will be put into senior's and community centres in Kitchener (2 per location). (iv) Boathouse in Victoria Park . Don is looking for someone to run the boathouse in Victoria Park. 6. NEXT MEETING The next meeting will take place on Tuesday June 19 from 4-6 p.m. in the Schmaltz Room at Kitchener City Hall.
