ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Tuesday January 11, 2005 - 4:00 p.m.
CITY OF KITCHENER
PRESENT: Peter Hinchcliffe (Chair), Virginia MacDonnell Eichhorn, Annalee Moore, Jennifer
Breithaupt, Ron Green, Robert Gissing, Graham Yeates, Martin DeGroot, John Gazzola.
REGRETS: Sivakumar Somasundram, Denis Pellerin, Erina Harris, Lori Palubeski, Don Chapman.
1. DELEGATION: Paul Eichorn
Paul attended to provide details on the upcoming Grand Exposition film/video festival. Launch to
be held at the Children's Museum on Monday February 28 from 5-10 p.m.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES AND REVIEW OF AGENDA
A correction was made to the December minutes noting that WRAG is an initiative of ASAP and
not of DAC. With the change recorded, a motion was made by Annalee, seconded by Graham, to
accept the minutes of the December meeting. All were in favour; carried.
3. BUSINESS ARISING
3.1 Terms of Reference
· Two changes were made to the revised (by Clerk's Department) Terms of Reference:
members may now serve a two-year term and five members will be considered a quorum.
· In response to the need for a multi-cultural representative, it was noted that this category is
automatically considered.
· % for Art and CulturePlan II was deferred to February.
4. NEW BUSINESS
4.1 Jury Selection for the Downtown Centre Public Art
The proposal for the Downtown Community Centre Public Art project submitted by Nicholas Rees
was accepted by PAWG. This consists of a wall sculpture using shoeprints from actual Kaufman
factory shoes. A motion was made by Annalee, seconded by Jennifer, that ACAC endorse this
selection. All were in favour; carried.
4.2 Healthy Communities Plan Working Group
· Annalee will be the ACAC representative, if the time commitment is nominal. Annalee will talk
with Shelley Adams.
4.3 Resignation
· Cathy Menard has resigned from ACAC. Sivakumar will replace Cathy on the Grants
Committee. Isabella Cisterna was recommended as a replacement on ACAC. Erina will check
with Clerk's.
5. REPORTS
5.1 Public Art Working Group (PAWG) Report - Virginia
· Four options have been selected for the Rotunda logo. Final selection will be made in the
next few months and brought to ACAC.
· Brochures were distributed re AIR Tony Urquhart.
· WRAG - over $3000 in ads have been sold in the first issue (due February 1). The number to
be printed has been increased to 2500.
· AIR: Tony Urquhart is doing a great job (see flyers for lecture given at ARTERY).

5.2 Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) Report - Denis
No report as Denis was absent.
5.3 Cultural Development Committee (CDC) Report - Ron
· An issue has been raised by the universities regarding the effect on public art collections of
new fees from CARFAC required to display individual pieces - may affect city-owned
collections.
· C2G2 has a new $3 admittance charge. Also many events of interest coming up.
5.4 Water Region Arts Council (WRAC) Report - Martin
· Live/Work Space Project is ongoing. A survey has been put out on the issue - call WRAC for
details on survey and two upcoming meetings.
· WRAC has contracted with the Region to study AIR positions. Rather than have a regional
AIR, is it possible to encourage businesses, community associations, etc., to create positions?
WRAC is hiring a person to collect information on existing positions/requirements and will
look into building a "tool-kit" for interested groups.
· MT Space - Tsunami Relief cultural gathering is being held on January 21.
· Arts Capacity Building Project - Ernie Ginsler is heading a local committee in collaboration
with like groups in Kingston, Windsor and Sudbury to identify best practices for arts
stabilization in mid-size communities.
· Cultural Directory to be updated this year.
· Community Learning Space is up and running but getting very limited use. Needs resources
to upgrade/maintain calendar.
5.5 Staff Reports
No staff reports.
6.0 OTHER
Multi-language tours now available at C2G2 - usually on weekends.
7.0 ADJOURNMENT/NEXT MEETING
The next ACAC meeting will take place on February 8th at 4:00 p.m. in the Schmaltz Room at
Kitchener City Hall.
