Mr. Benninger was congratulated by members on the outstanding first class facility and his hospitality. 1. Approval of Minutes of April 24th, 2002 Minutes of April 24th, 2002 were approved as written Moved by Shawky Fahel Seconded by Lawrence Bingeman Carried 2. Committee Membership With the termination of Jeff Willmer from the EDAC Committee, due to his recent appointment as Director of Planning with the City of Kitchener, members reviewed names of possible encumbents and shortlisted 3 possible candidates. Action: Glenn Scheels will contact Paul Kuntz, Rick Brock and John Pollock to solicit their interest in joining the Committee. Committee will then put forward a recommendation at their next meeting of June 26th. Recommendation will then be forwarded to the Deputy City Clerk to be placed on a future agenda for consideration and approval by City Council. 3. Shirley Avenue/Lancaster Corporate Centre Patricia Bacon, Sr. Economic Development Officer gave Committee a brief overview of the first meeting held by the sub-committee formed to investigate the list of concerns with this area. Ms. Bacon will keep committee informed as this project progresses. 4. Westside Lands George Borovilos informed Committee that this item has been deferred by the Region of Waterloo so that regional staff can further explore their options. A recommendation is expected within the next 2-4 weeks. After discussion, Committee decided to put forth a recommendation to expedite and support this initiative. Recommendation: That the Economic Development Advisory Committee supports the designation of the employable lands which extend West of Fischer-Hallman - South of Bleams Road and; That the City consider advancing services of the sanitary sewer to facilitate the development. Motion by: Jane Jantzi Seconded by: Hans Pottkamper Carried 5. Waterloo Region in the 21st Century Kevin Curtis, Administrator, Policy Planning and Neil Malcolm with the Region of Waterloo gave Committee an overview, by powerpoint, of where the Region is going from a land-use perspective and how to manage growth in the future. Phase One tested the waters, researched what has already been done by interest groups and what's important. · Not many areas left to expand beyond 2016 · Where do we go from here? · Boundary lines could extend to Townships · How do we develop greenfields? · Make reurbanization more than just a theory · What incentives will bring vacant sites back to life? · How do we capitalize on transit system - LRT is an option? · Preserve urban areas; golf courses; hobby farms; mennonite community; etc. EDAC Minutes May 22, 2002 Phase Two: · Currently hiring consultants · Website has been developed · Community workshops to get feedback · Draft suggestions will be available in the Fall 2002 with final by year-end Mr. Curtis was thanked and asked to keep committee informed, especially with respect to the employment lands. 6.
