CITY OF KITCHENER
The Compass Kitchener Committee met on this date, commencing at 4:05 p.m.
Present: Don Bourgeois, John Hall, Tamara McBride, Trudy Beaulne, Pat Doherty, Glen Woolner
Staff: Michael May, Shelley Adams, Claudia Cuellar, Jenn Walter
Regrets: Douglas Parker, Paul Royston, Philip Awere-Gambrah
Don apologized for cancellations of the months of February, March, and April. WAYK info sessions
and consultations were in full swing, at times scheduled for 3 nights in a week, and full staff and
volunteer efforts were focused on that work.
Jenn Walter, Corporate Project Assistant was introduced to the Committee. Jenn will be working with
Shelley Adams on Corporate Projects, and will be taking minutes for the Compass Kitchener
Committee.
1. Update on Who Are You Kitchener? Process
• Ward 4 (Stanley Park) is holding a second consultation that will be taking place on Monday
May 9t" in the evening, as part of a larger consultation that also includes discussion re the
main branch of the KPL.
• Although the turn-out to city-wide and ward meetings has been, for the most part, small in
number, the discussion and information sharing that has occurred within those meetings
has been quite outstanding.
• It was noted that there has been a surprising number of booklets completed online.
• Trudy updated committee on the Kitchen Table Chats, of which 3 of 4 have been
completed...
o First was with Families -Mom's, Dad's, and Kids (childcare was provided)
o Second had a youth focus
o Third was for a low income group, and
o Fourth is in the process of being rescheduled
o She has not had any Fringe Dwellers in the groups yet, and all have found the
Budget section to be an `eye opener'.
• Good discussion has come from the 3rd question re: multicultural melting pot vs mosaic.
• Many members have found that the meetings seem more credible with a Councillor or the
CAO in attendance.
• We may need to do more educating, and use different methods of communication when it
comes to the multicultural community. Many of the New Canadians were not aware of Who
Are You Kitchener?, who the Councillors are, or who the Mayor is.
2. Relationship with Healthy Communities Plan and Recommendations
Don provided an update on the Healthy Community Plan as it relates to Compass
Kitchener.
The Healthy Communities Plan working group suggest several meetings per year between
Compass Kitchener and other City Advisory committees to ensure City is on track, rather
then support an "auditing" operation re same.
COMPASS KITCHENER COMMITTEE MINUTES
January 4, 2006 - 2 - CITY OF KITCHENER
• Compass Kitchener will work with City to ensure they continue heading in the direction Who
Are You Kitchener? and Healthy Communities Plan is taking us.
• The Healthy Communities Plan looks internally at the gaps and overlaps whereas Who Are
You Kitchener? looks at external forces such as citizens and what the public wants for the
future.
• At this point, it is suggested that Healthy Communities Plan marry Compass Kitchener, and
groups come back in the fall with a full report including all pertinent information from both
projects. HCP as the "internal" snapshot (or moving picture) of our corporate activities and
interests and Compass K as the priorities and good ideas of the community.
• Indicators to use for an annual report card are as yet undetermined.
3. Final "product"
• Michael May discussed the upcoming presentation to Council with the committee.
• May 29, 2006 Healthy Communities Plan will be presented to Council.
• June 19, 2006 Who Are You Kitchener? according to Compass Kitcheners mandate will be
presented to Council.
• The two will combine over the summer and present full findings in the fall.
• The Presentation to Council will be three fold -Vision, Report Card, and Identity.
• Report Card information will come directly from Environics.
• We will pull trends and commonalities from the Identity piece to include in presentation.
• It is unfortunate, but there is not enough time to present all actual findings at this point.
• In discussing presentation, items that we would like to try to include are:
1. Vision
2. Report Card
3. Identity (bumper sticker?)
4. Number of people involved and breakdown
5. Numbers for different segments
6. Chart with three different findings -Environics, Who Are You Kitchener? Work
Books, and the average combined
7. Validation of information from Environics survey
8. What have we learned
9. Indicate that the public wants to be engaged!
Next meeting will be May 16, 2006 - 2:30 - 4:00 to discuss the Identity piece.
^ Discuss at this meeting sending out letters/e-mails to advise of
presentation June 19, 2006
4. Adjournment
Meeting adjourned 5:45 p.m.
