1. DELEGATION
1.1 Nicholas Rees -Update on Industrial Artifacts Project
• A gala for the 10th anniversary of the artifacts project will be held on Thursday October 12
at 7:30pm in the Rotunda at City Hall. A series of lectures on this subject is currently being
planned.
• The project has acquired two new artifacts: a cookie molder and a school bell ringer. The
City of Waterloo has a drill press and a barrel hoop driver.
• Nicholas received a grant last year to put together a small book on the artifacts. The book
is almost ready for print and is expected to be available in early May. Once ready, the book
can be purchased from KWAG and from Nicholas and possibly, from Wordsworth Books and
both university bookstores.
• After being found outside a barn in Delhi, the steam engine, "Hazel", is now being stored at
a City facility on Guelph Street. As the building offers less than ideal conditions and due to
being stored outside at the barn, the piece is deteriorating and will require extensive
refurbishment. ACAC will receive a copy of a report that will go to Council regarding the
condition of the engine and recommendations for a short and long term strategy.
1.2 Kevin Schmalz -Firefighters Memorial
• Kevin attended to provide information to ACAC and ask for an endorsement regarding a
proposal for a donation of a commissioned artwork from Peter E. Snyder, of the
Firefighter's Memorial and surrounding area. The piece is being commissioned by the
Firefighter's Association, which plans to secure a donor, commission Mr. Snyder to do the
painting, produce a limited edition set of prints to be sold and donate the artwork to City
Hall, to be hung in a prominent public space. Income from the print sales will be used for
ongoing costs for the memorial (a maintenance fund). Discussion took place to clarify
certain points and a suggestion was made that the association go ahead with the project,
the prints be sold and then discuss donating the artwork. Kevin will talk with association
colleagues prior to sending a report to Council. It was also suggested that the association
submit a grant proposal for a City of Kitchener General Provision Grant (deadline April 21 ).
Kevin will also attend the next PAWG meeting to share this information. Kevin was thanked
and left the meeting.
• Members felt that this proposal was sidestepping the City of Kitchener juried process and
that the matter has to be considered carefully before the City can accept the donation.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES AND REVIEW OF AGENDA
A motion was made by Martin, seconded by Lawrence, to approve the minutes of the March
meeting. All were in favour; carried.

• Isabel noted that the project is on hold as she was to be provided with a letter from City
Hall.
• The area Youth Symphony Orchestra would not endorse the project as their season is done.
• It was suggested that as timelines are tight for a June exchange, that the dates for the
visits be moved to coincide with other events, possibly in Fall 2006.
3.2 Grants Sub-Committee Up-Date -Cheryl
• Three grants were approved at the last CSC meeting.
3.3 KOR Update -Cheryl
• KOR is winding down operations. All creditors have been satisfied, except for the City of

• Sivakumar recommended that this item be added to the April agenda for discussion.
• Note: Leisure has a print run of 71,000 and is delivered four/year to Kitchener homes.
• Currently, one page in Leisure is set aside as an arts and culture page. Cheryl spoke with
Communications Department staff and was told that it isn't possible to assign additional
pages to arts and culture.
