HomeMy WebLinkAboutDowntown Advisory - 2002-08-08DOWNTOWN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES August 8, 2002 CITY OF KITCHENER The Downtown Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:05 p.m. chaired by Councillor John Smola, with the following members present: Joan Euler, Glen Woolner, Doug Hoch Others Present: David Corks, Michele Hodgins, Karen Taylor-Harrison As attendance was Iow for this meeting, and not enough members available for a quorum, it was decided to defer all information agenda items to next month. 1. APPROVAL OF AGENDA - AUGUST 8, 2002 No quorum present, 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - JUNE 13, 2002 No quorum present, 3. HISTORY OF FA(~ADE LOANS Deferred to September meeting, 4. CONTROLLED LAND USES Deferred to September meeting, 5. SOCIAL ISSUES - KDBA COMMITTEE Deferred to September meeting, 6. KDBA UP-DATE No up-date available at this meeting, 7. DOWNTOWN UP-DATE · There has been a lot of attention given by the press lately on the construction of the new market and the Children's Museum, · The Waxx (Tony DiBattista's new nightclub that replaces Metropolis) officially opens Friday August 9th. The Still Bar & Grill restaurant should be opening soon. · The City of Kitchener has slated the 1st week of September as "Downtown Week", with events planned from Tuesday to Saturday. · The launch the downtown vision will also take place during Downtown Week. 8. EDAC UP-DATE Joan Euler reported that EDAC has had a lot of presentations during the last few EDAC meetings, i.e. tourism, transportation, etc. EDAC will be discussing in September the CTT issue, and informed DAC that John Tennant is the new Executive Director at CTT. EDAC also discussed City of Kitchener's industrial land and the lack of it and where to expand? Discussed the redevelopment of land, especially in the downtown and adaptive reuse of buildings was discussed. Over 12,000 people come to the downtown to work every day, how can we get them out on the streets in downtown? Discussed what's been done in the downtown, arts & culture, children focus, etc. 9. SAFE & HEALTHY COMMUNITIES UP-DATE Doug Hoch reported that at the June meeting of Safe & Healthy Communities, Councillor Vrbanovic spoke to committee regarding lodging houses and by-law enforcement and advised that the Planning Department is reviewing information and its impact on lodging houses and by-law enforcement. 10. ARTS & CULTURE COMMITTEE UP-DATE No up-date available at this meeting. 11.
