Report No.: CAO-06-002
Subject: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
TOURISM RECOMMENDATION
RECOMMENDATION:
The Economic Development Advisory Committee urge the Mayor to include tourism,
and the establishment of DMO (Destination Marketing Organization) at the Regional
level at the forthcoming meetings, that will be held between the Mayors of the Region,
and the Regional Chairman; and further, this new Tourism initiative to be set up to be
industry driver.
REPORT:
The need to effectively market the tourism product of the Waterloo Region has been a
concern of the Economic Development Advisory Committee for several years. Industry
leaders have made the case for a collaborative approach to capture economies. The
Province and the larger tourism industry does not recognize tourism centres unless they
are of adequate size and/or unique in their own right. As a Region, we have the
possibility of being designated as a tourism destination, whereas as individual cities and
communities we do not. Our cluster of complementary attractions and activities is
spread through out the Region of Waterloo and neighbouring jurisdictions. The creation
of a Destination Marketing Organization would allow effective product development and
marketing.
