HomeMy WebLinkAboutCSD-06-020 - Commission Agreement, Tony Urquhart, Artist-In-Residence 2005 ) ~ Community Services ~ Report To: Date of Meeting: Submitted By: Prepared By: Ward(s) Involved: Date of Report: Report No.: Subject: Community Services Committee February 20, 2006 Cheryl York, Arts/Culture Co-ordinator Ext. 3381 Cheryl York, Arts/Culture Co-ordinator Ext. 3381 All January 30, 2006 CSD-06-020 COMMISSION AGREEMENT, TONY URQUHART, ARTIST- IN-RESIDENCE 2005 RECOMMENDATION: That the Community Services Committee endorse the recommendation of the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee and Public Art Working Group to approve and install the final commission of the City's 2005 Artist-In-Residence, Tony Urquhart, at a City-owned site yet to be determined; and That the Mayor and Clerk be authorized to sign the Artist-In-Residence - Year 2005 Commission Agreement with Tony Urquhart in a form satisfactory to the City Solicitor, such agreement encompassing the terms set out in Report CSD-06- 020. BACKGROUND: The City of Kitchener's innovative Artist-In-Residence (A.I.R.) Program celebrated its 10th anniversary year with the appointment of Tony Urquhart. During his residency, Tony organized a high-profile lecture series and led sketching tours throughout the city. One of his popular events was a drawing class held at Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre. With his enthusiastic participation and professionalism, Tony enhanced the Artist-in-Residence Program profile, bringing it national recognition. For the commissioned art work part of the program, he created a sculpture proposal based on the significant cultural theme of the barn in our region's heritage. Report No. CSD-06-020 Page 2 REPORT: The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee and Public Art Working Group recommend that Tony's proposal, a sculpture titled "Barn Spirit", be approved as his final commission and that it be installed in a suitable City-owned location still to be determined. Once installed, the commission will be unveiled during a community celebration. The draft Agreement has been reviewed by Legal Services. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The 10th anniversary year artist commission is funded at $7,500 from the Public Art Trust Fund as funded by the Lions Club of Kitchener. As in past years, the City additionally assumes the cost of the official unveiling event; the cost of an identifying bronze plaque; and the cost of installation of the art work. These expenditures are charged to 621600 - Operating. COMMUNICATIONS: The Artist-in-Residence Program supports the resident artist with marketing services to facilitate direct communication between artist and public, through print and other appropriate media. CONCLUSION: The City of Kitchener's Artist-in-Residence Program is the only municipal program of its kind in Canada. One of the enduring and tangible benefits of the program is the artist's final commissioned art work which becomes part of the City's Fine Art Collection. Cheryl York, Arts/Culture Co-ordinator AP
