SPECIAL EVENT 2006 EVENT SCHEDULE
RECOMMENDATION:
For information only.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Kitchener Special Events unit has prepared this report to provide a brief summary of
the planned event schedule for 2006. Special Events have continued to take a strategic
approach to designing programs and developing partnerships in order to maximize both
resources and the positive economic and social impacts that special events can have on the
community.
REPORT:
Over the past two years, the Special Events unit has developed a number of new events and
approaches to event delivery. For example, the unit is working closely with the Downtown
Team in Economic Development and members of the Culture Plan II Committee to ensure that
the investment made in special events are meeting the overall strategic needs of the downtown.
This plan has also been sent to members of the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee for
comment.
In addition, 2005 was the first year of a new partnership with the Kitchener Downtown Business
Association, which sawall downtown events centralized in the Special Events portfolio. This
strategic partnership continues to evolve and the attached schedule has been looked at in
conjunction with the KDBA.
The Special Event unit is also responsible for event programming at the Market.
A full plan for 2006 has been attached. Additional event activity will be added as opportunities
evolve with external event organizers.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The 2006 event schedule has been developed within the allocated Special Event unit budget
and the funding allocation from the Kitchener Downtown Business Association.
CONCLUSION:
The Special Event unit has various levels of involvement with the events on the attached list.
The involvement ensures the unit is achieving its primary mandates:
· Bring people downtown
· Enhance community spirit and pride
· Support event development and growth
