RECOMMENDATION:
Fire Inspection and Permit Fees
THAT the fire inspection and permit fees, contained in the 2006 Comprehensive Fee Review
and Financial Services Department Report FIN-05-039, be approved effective January 1, 2006.
BACKGROUND:
On November 21, the Finance and Corporate Services Committee considered the City's 2006
Comprehensive Fee Review. At that time, fire inspection and permit fees were deferred for
consideration until December 5 to accommodate public notice and meeting requirements.
REPORT:
The Municipal Act, 2001 outlines a public consultation process which must be followed prior to
the adoption of a By-law imposing fees or charges for inspections and permits for police or fire
purposes. The Act specifically requires that the Municipality:
· Hold at least one public meeting at which anyone who attends has an opportunity to
make representation with respect to the matter;
· Give 21 days notice of the public meeting; and
· Make information concerning the proposed fees and charges available to the public.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The table attached to this report provides a description of the proposed fire inspection and
permit fees along with the amount of the fees and the rationale for imposing them.
A 3% increase in fire inspection and permit fees will result in approximately $800 of additional
revenue on an annual basis.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Notice of the public meeting to consider fire inspection and permit fees was placed in the local
newspaper on November 11 , 2005.
CONCLUSION:
Staff recommends that Council approve the fire inspection and permit fees as outlined in the
2006 Comprehensive Fee Review and this report, effective January 1, 2006.
